Posts: 133 New Castle Delaware | Has anybody removed and replaced their cam chain tensioners. Anything I should look for or be careful with when replacing? any tips? There is not much said in the manual but that always makes me nervous. |

Posts: 133 New Castle Delaware | Want to pull them to inspect them because I have a loud tap at start up but then quiets down. While running it sounds like a like a whine noise that wasn't there before, about halfway down the jugs. Read some other posts on the vmcthat coud be the tensioners. |

I thought about doing this but stopped myself since the bike is new. No issues with mine but I want to paint them black. Don't want chrome in the middle of the cylinder. I'm currently devising the best way to paint them on the bike to achieve a good look and not having over spray where I don't want it. |

| I wouldn't think the chains are bad more likely the adjuster them selves are just not holding there oil.
So when you start the bike there is no oil and as the motor runs the adjusters fill up once more.
Look at the adjusters first |

Posts: 185 Rhode Island | Mine were replaced in September; the rear had an obvious issue it was like a burr inside. When the noise continued, we changed the front which didn't have an obvious issue like the rear. All was fine until about 3-4 weeks ago then the loud noise on start up came back; as luck would have it, we had a fairly warm end of Sept and beginning of OCT. As soon as it got cold again the noise was back and lasted for maybe 20 seconds on start up. The wrench spent 2 weeks training with Lloyd and just got back yesterday and once again, it was warm. Kyle is excellent and I am confident he will get it fixed as soon as it gets cold so he can hear it a few times to help narrow it down. The only way to describe the noise is more of a wrapping noise, if you have ever heard a loose connector rod it is like that only not as loud. The bike runs strong and is quiet when warm so something expands out when warm and tightens up. Since it sat for 2 weeks then started without the noise, oil draining out of tensioners and lifters wouldn't seem to be the issue so it must be something loose.
I'll keep you posted once Kyle finds it.

Posts: 133 New Castle Delaware | Jim, I Pulled both tensioners out this past weekend. Both seemed fine and had same amount of tension on each and no signs of burrs or any scarring. Put them back in, same noise at startup but only about 5 seconds. The rear one was a bear to get back in trying to press and get the thread started with the exhaust in the way. Mine still runs strong but seems like more engine noise than before this issue popped up for me also in September. |

| Doesn't the timing have to be a certain place to pull and replace? |

Not if you are just pulling the tensioners
