Posts: 3006 San Antonio, TX | Let's ride Sunday Feb 19, 2012 from Bandera, TX to Camp Wood, TX.
From San Antonio the group will leave for Bandera at 7:00 AM from the Exxon station at Bandera Road and IH 1604. Breakfast in Bandera at the Old Spanish Trail(OST). About 8:30 AM we will be relaxing in front of the OST.
Kick Stand Up (KSU) in Bandera at 8:45 AM for Camp Wood with 30 minute stop at the Frio County Motorcycle Stop. Gas in Camp Wood, photo shoot of the group and then ride to Lone Star Motorcycle Museum for Lunch.
After lunch ride back to Bandera. There we can gas up and split with those from Austin and Kerrville.
So it will be a lot of riding and not much sitting around.
If you are going shoot me an email to Radioteacher ("@") gmail.com. I will send you my contact info.

Great ride today. Beautiful weather, excellent riders (except maybe me) only one near miss with a Turkey(the bird not the two legged kind).
Some thoughts on the ride.
Was cold this morning at a damp 40 degrees. Roads needs to completely dry out before running as hard as I did at first. Breakfast was excellent at the Old Spanish Trail in Bandera. Ron got a call and had to return to San Antonio on his Kingpin after Breakfast. Bummer.
The friendly staff at the Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop told up that the Motorcycle Museum does not open until March through November. So we could not stop to eat there.
Jim, had a great idea for lunch in Tarpley at Mac and Ernie's Roadside Eatery. I never would have thought to stop there. It was featured in Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives. Check out the video below.

Frio Canyon Motorcycle Stop also informed "Boudreaux" (a rider that joined us from Houston) that we were down the road. We found each other on 377 and now we had four Visions and two Harleys in the Group.
Many rocks were in the road on 377 about the size of a half a loaf of bread in the east bound lane. We all made a mental note to avoid them on our return run.
I stopped for fuel in Bandera, TX. That is where Dawg and Sonny went back to San Antonio. So the four Visions took Hwy 16 to Hwy 46 West. At IH10 and 46 Boudreaux took off for Houston. The Visions, now three, went down 46 to Blanco road. cchristo pealed off at his turn off, then I pulled off and JmpMstr went on home.
On my way, I noticed a man in a motorcycle jacket walking away from a motorcycle that was off the side of the road. I turned around and gave him a ride back to his house about two miles away. He was testing a 1976 Kawasaki KZ 650 when it died on him.
Just another service we provide.
Thanks to all for making this a great ride!

Posts: 337 san antonio, tx | Excellent ride! The turkey did come pretty close to you, good thing it didn't have extra legs. One of them may have hit you!
Nice write up of the ride too.
Any pictures of you two up with the Kawasaki rider? I used to have a 76 Kawasaki 650 and put several 10s of thousands of miles on it. It only broke down on me once. Stranded me for two days in Georgia!
We have to do it again! |

Sorry, I can not describe a feathered Turkey without a foot in my mouth. I guess I should have said "Bird not Human" or "Winged not Armed".
It was close enough when it flew by that I could read the "F*** Butterball" tattoo on its thigh.
Starchasr,
I was thinking of riding the Pettus Ridge someday.
On IH 37 in Oakville take FM 1358 to FM 623 then right on FM1465 and left on 181 to Pettus with a break at the DQ.
Leave Pettus to Goliad via FM 623, FM883, FM1351 and see the Texas Mile runway. Continue on to Goliad via FM1351 and Hwy 59. Turn south on 77 and visit the Battle site of Goliad.
The fort is called the Presidio La Bahia by the Mexicans and Fort Defiance by the Texians. After surrendering to the Mexican Army, the army killed 39 of the 40 wounded in the fort that could not walk and 303 men that could walk were marched out and shot, stabbed and clubbed. The entire Texian force was killed except for 28 men who feigned death and escaped.

I have never visited Presidio La Bahia, a shrine of Texas Independence. At the Battle at San Jacinto for Texas Independence the Texians cried "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Goliad" while killing 600 Mexican troops and capturing General Santa Anna.
I have driven the roads from Oakville to Pettus many times and think they would be very nice motorcycle roads.
I think that the ridge of hills falls off before Goliad but the flat land roads look like fun too.

I found a pic that looked like the bike on the side of the road.

Reference the discussion of Presidio La Bahia and the Battle/Massacre at Goliad...March 24th is a re-enactment/anniversary date.
