Posts: 337 san antonio, tx | I've started riding almost exclusively with a full face helmet ever since I added the bluetooth dongle and put the Cardo Scala system in my HJC modular helmet.
The other day, the right speaker went out on it. It is still covered under warranty but I really didn't want to spend the time and effort of sending it off and waiting for a couple of weeks. Not only that, but the sound quality of the Scala was never all that impressive. Better than listening to the Visions speakers by a huge margin, but still, never really blew me away.
I stopped by a pawn shop on the way home from work yesterday and picked up a nice set of full size Blaupunkt headphones for $10.00.
Ripped everything apart and threw everything in the trash can except the speakers and the thin foam material that actually covers the speaker.
First thing I noticed was that the actual drivers of the Scala system are probably on 20 or 25 mm in diameter. The Blaupunk drivers are at least 40 mm, about the same size as the Scala speaker with it's plastic mounting assembly.
I desoldered the Scala Speakers and soldered on the Blaupunkt speakers. I spread Loctite Stik 'n Seal over the terminals and some of the wire to relieve stress and covered that with some Velcro. I trimmed the Velcro to fit around the magnet and trimmed the outside edge flush with the speaker.
I then ran a bead of adhesive around the edge of the speaker and glued the thin foam material to the speaker. Kind of kept playing with the material for a few minutes until the adhesive set.
Next morning I used scissors to trim the excess material and put everything back in the helmet.
Huge difference. It still doesn't really "thump", but the bass response is at least 3 times better than the original speakers. They are every bit as loud, and do not distort at the highest volume setting.
I'm typing this while wearing the helmet. Wife is looking at me like I'm nuts.
