Ok I know there is a thread on here somewhere about removing that bottom bearing race in the neck. Can someone point me in the right direction or give me some pointers on getting it out please.

thanks

I don't you're level of expertise or what bike you have, but if I had to do it again, I'd get a small round race punch, and drill a hole from the top side and knock it out, one shot. I took mine out by eating away with a small grinder, about 2 days it took me. There is no harm done in doing a small drill hole and using a good punch and tapping it out. Perhaps KevinX has some advice pm him. You're dealing with cast aluminum and there is really no fixing if you mess it up too bad.

plenty off mechanical experience.....you would of thought that vic would have left a slight channel that you could run a cold chisel down and hammer it out.

any other ideas would be great

I welded a couple of small, but long, rods to it. Clamped a couple of Vice-Grips to the rods and pounded the Vice grips down. The heat from the welder helped to expand and contract the two metals of the race and neck, combined with the pulling force of smacking the vice-grips did the trick. F'n pain the ASS!

yeah, that would work too, but when you're shade-tree with limited resources, and I'm not an everyday welder, that wouldn't have worked. But what would have simplified is the channel or the hole and bam, it's out in a tap.

what year is the bike?  what makes you think the race is bad? if it's not pitted or the surface show no wear then why?

You should be thinking about the preload putting it back together

Go to the prts store, and get one of those seal pullers; that look like a serial killers weapon. You can catch the top edge of the race, and hit the handle with a hammer. Work the tool around, and the bearing comes right out

I wish I had thought, or had known that. I didn't think there would have been enough grip - I'll know what to do the next time around.

I and a fellow Vision rider are doing the same this early spring,,, along with fork oil and seals,,, ... does the same tool do the stem bearing also or just the race in the head? Or is there another tool to get that off.... Im assuming add some heat but question is the puller. TNX!
