Posts: 103 Davenport, IA | Ok, I have search treads and did not see anything relating to my issue. I have heard of the fuel filler neck and cap issues with raw gas smell, but not exhaust smell.
I have an '09 Street Premium Vision with 17,000 miles. For the past several months, i am experiencing exhaust smell coming up through the steering area. This is not a raw gas smell but rather exhaust. I have checked for exhaust leaks around the headers and hose connections but can't seem to find where there are any leaks. The exhaust smell should be behind me going out the rear of the bike through the pipes, but is very evident in the cockpit when riding. It is even more evident when more throttle is given. Anyone else have this experience or any input on what I should be looking for? |

Good luck |

I notice exhaust fumes more when I have the lowers outward in cooler riding conditions and somewhat gets nausiating! If I can't find what the cause is, I'll take it to the dealer. |

Posts: 1365 Central Maryland | Did you check your crankcase breather hose; that attached to the top of the crankcase behind the rear head? Is it actually oil that you're smelling? it could have come loose from the airbox/frame assembly directly underneath you.... |

However, the exhaust leak in the front or rear is not some easy, I sugguest that you pull the exhaust to get a good look at the gasket. I'll say from experience that I complained of an exhaust leak because of the popping issue to the dealer, but they never pulled the exhaust. I pulled it myself and found the ends to be malformed and the gaskets were black all the way around. Cleaned the ends and replaced the gaskets and all was fine. But not once did we see evidence of an exhaust leak before pulling the pipes. Nailer, you're quick, but read my last line ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

If you CAREFULLY use a Bic lighter (the long kind used to light grills/candles) around a header/head junction, you will find an exhaust leak. The flame will flicker....

Posts: 103 Davenport, IA | Thanks for the replies gentlemen! This helps me troubleshoot. Checked crankcase breather hose and both ends are connected properly. There hasn't been any unusual popping and bike seldom ever pops. No appearances of carbon deposits and really can't hear leaks. However, with additional winter riding gear and a full face helmet, I may not hear a slight leak. But, the Bic Lighter test sounds like something I may try. It's just driving me crazy because I know something isn't right.
Like VARYDER said, he didn't see any carbon residue either and may have been the slightest of a leak.
If any other ideas, keep them coming! |

Posts: 1365 Central Maryland | The Bic lighter test works... move it around slowly, looking for it to flicker; an indication of exhaust gases hitting it.
Keep the flame low and be very mindful of the fuel tank above; when you are searching exhaust areas with the tip of the lighter

Posts: 103 Davenport, IA | Will, I tried the Bic Lighter test and could not see any flicker around both header flanges. That was a good test idea, thanks for advise.
I was just thinking...when I checked the crankcase ventillation hose, it had a clamp on lower end, but no clamp on upper end where it connects to the backbone of the frame. Is the upper end supposed to have a clamp? If so, I may have some leakage there?? Maybe?? I'll probably put a hose clamp on it for the sake of process of elimination. |
