Since I already have an I-phone 4 I was thinking of using it instead of buying a GPS. I already have the plug to keep the I-phone charged and the base and arm for a RAM mount. I see RAM has something called an aqua box that is supposed to keep the contents dry while still letting cords enter or exit. I can get some type of special thread that can be sewn on the fingertips of my riding gloves that will allow me to use the touch screen. I am hoping that if I purchase a good GPS app I will be able to get turn-by-turn directions while still being able to listen to music when not receiving directions. Any reason this would not work or is there a flaw in my plan? Thanks. John

Works great for me! I use the MotionX Drive app. The app is cheap but you will need to buy voice for $29.99 per year. Still worth it since the maps are live and it's easy to find things. I haven't found a good mount/setup yet though. Let me know what you come up with. I leave the phone in the glove box and it still works great - direction & music.

Mapquest makes an iphone app that gives voice directions. I haven't tried it but a friend says it works great. And its FREE!

I was just looking at a new gps, a friend at work ask why, you have a smart phone. after taking the time to learn how to use it, I have decided that it will work just fine, better than a gps in my price range. I am going to try and down load some music and see if I can use it like my Ipod. The phone I have is the verizon Commando, its water, dust and shock resistent, I found a mount with a ram ball attached for $30.00.

a cellphones gps is only as good as the cellphone reception area you are in.. UNLESS you have gps software that caches all the maps into the memory of the smartphone. i know this because when i got my first Droid phone i was driving in WV and lost cellphone reception. the gps still worked as long as i stayed on course. but as soon as i got off course since i didnt have cell reception and was unable to recalculate me back on track.. just keep this in mind..

The one I use does caches and you have options on how much memory you want it to cache. I haven't had any problems.

btw i have 2 mounts now.. 1gps garmin ram mount i will keep in my bike just in case the cellphone reception is not good.. but yesterday i got that x Mount for my droid bionic 4G smartphone. i plan on doing the same thing.. stream pandora internet radio, xm droid app, mp3s and using google maps. whats nice it the gps will pause the music and tell you turn by turn then go right back to the music. it is also nice if your at a stop light you can read a missed text message.

I received the "conductive thread" in the mail today. I got it off of e-bay for $4.80 with shipping for 15 feet of the stuff. I have not sewn it into the fingertips of my gloves yet but just playing around with it it does seem to work. I won't sew it into waterproof gloves as I assume it will compromise the waterproofness but hopefully it works out for my other gloves.
It's good to know the GPS should work well enough for my uses. Thanks guys.

I use an Android phone for GPS/MP3/Phone on a Cardo G4 system. It works pretty darn good. I don't even try to use the touch screen with gloves. Normally, I just keep the phone in my pocket or even plugged in, inside the truck. It keeps me from playing and driving.

Yesterday, while driving and thinking, I wondered "will my iPad work in a bracket?" What about a 7"Galaxy Tab on a bracket?

Answer to iPad 1, is no. No bluetooth to helmet.

You can still take advantage. The extra year gets tacked onto the end of your current subscription.
