San Antonio, TX | I got a call this afternoon from an owner of a 2008 Vision with 15,000 miles on it (second owner) he was exiting the highway and about halfway down the off ramp the back tire locked up and the engine stopped. He kept the bike up and he and the wife are just fine. Thank goodness for that.
He was able to get it out of gear and to a safe parking lot before calling me. He started the engine and it sounded bad. He killed it and and with help from his family and a Motorcycle U-Haul tailer to got it back to San Antonio.
The bike will be at the dealers on Tuesday and I will let you know what they find. I can not imagine that it will be an easy fix. Other then a few clutches and some electrical issues (loose battery cable, locked up ecu) have you heard of any mechanical engine/trasmission failures?
I did hear of one that was caused when someone doing a burnout shifted gears but nothing like this.

scotts valley, California | I've been wondering the same thing. The second owner/15k miles guy sure is not the norm. Sounds like sabotage, sugar in the gas or something like that. Glad to hear that they rode it to a stop without mishap. |

Gainesville Fl Home of the Gators | My bet is a support bearing under one of the gear self destructed, and the tranny dropped into two gears at one. If the description of the failure is accurate |

Brighton, TN | kevinx, I am merely an amateur at all things motorized. But guys like you who have an idea of what the problem is based on a fuzzy description always amaze me.. This is amazement in a purely astonished, wish I could be more like ya'll. I know a guy who I could pull the bolt off a classic car, sight unseen for him, and he could tell me where it came from, model, year, right or left side, etc. I am always astonished with the amount of info he knows.
My simple knowledge, tells me that the motor didn't lock, cause he could still crank it. So, I go with Transmission, but that is pretty much where it ended, my thought process that is!
So, the question, kevinx is, "Does this happen often? Apparently you have seen it, before!
Maybe a better question is, When should the high mileage crowd start looking to freshen the motors backup, top end rebuild or lower end or Full. Even the transmission, clutch etc. Have you seen enough of the higher mileage rigs to get an idea for what we would need to do these bikes.
For instance, the VaRyder over 100k and starting to talk about clutch slippage. Should he just tilt the bike over and replace the clutch pack, button it up and be on his way? Inquiring minds want to know or just mine. |

Brighton, TN | Dude you might want to read and understand that I am giving him props for being an excellent mechanic and his ability to understand the mechanical items based off of a brief description is always astonishing! I'm sure he is right most of the time. I, however, do not have his skillset and for that I'm in AWE! |

| The "fingers" broke on my transmission with only 16,000 miles. Over two months at the dealer to fix the transmission problem. Over $3,500, covered by extended warranty. Hopefully my problems are behind me. Good luck |

Pollolittle.....Thanks its a genetic trick. My dad and Gramps used to sit on the porch of my Gramps house. Diagnosing every car that drove by. They were both mech engineers, and I thought they had super powers |

Missed the second question through the head swelling.
A high mileage Vic is not a high mileage engine. The bottom end, and trans have more in common with the design of a Subaru; then they do with any other motorcycle. Above that is a NikASil plated cyl, that shows virtually no wear at 100k. Properly maintained, and not overly beat on. There is no reason these engines could not easily make 200k. Syd is approaching 150,000 on a 92 that has not so much as had the primary off. I rode it for a week when it had 125 on the clock, and it ran, no it purred as good as new. So if I was Varyder. I would lay it over, pop in a complete clutch assy, and put on the next 100k |

Brighton, TN | Me likey! That's what I was hoping to hear. 100k on a clutch assembly doesn't sound too bad, does it? I would think I got good mileage out of the clutch Men and go for the next 100k. What is the lifespan of a clutchpak? Under "normal riding", commuting, just putting around. I do about 100 miles per day of just your run of the mill commute! Been wondering about this for a while! Thanks again for the info, good to here the perspective from the mechanic point of view! |
