Subject: Pay It Forward forum?

Fountain Inn, SC United States
Back when I managed the VMC's website, I created the forum "Pay It Forward" which was a big hit. Basically, members would list parts they were willing to give away free, Paying It Forward, to other members. Those who accepted these "gifts" were expected to offer up something themselves to continue paying it forward. Since the forum was only viewable by members, it didn't get out of hand across the internet. Over time, folks started posting "parts wanted" threads in the forum which really ruined its intent, imo.

It's been suggested to me by some members that we begin a Pay It Forward forum on Vision-Riders. Vision-Riders was born and has flourished as a completely free & open site (you only need to register to post threads and see photos). Therefore I'd like to get your thoughts on creating such a forum

A few of my own thoughts:

  •   I do not want it to become a "Gimme these parts for free, search forum".

  •   I COULD limit access to registered users

  •   Those that take advantage of an offer in the forum WOULD be expected to offer up something in return

  •   We've done very well without such a forum. When this site was starting out and the membership was smaller but tight-knit, that sort of think (ie Vision Pilot stickers) really brought the community together. The membership has grown considerably and has an even bigger lurking (unregistered) audience. There's still a great feeling of community here -- even Victory recognizes this -- so I'm not sure of such a forum's need.

I'd like to hear all thoughtful opinions.

Jeff

I for one would be in favor of such a forum. I have some miscellaneous inexpensive used parts I would be glad to 'forward' to a Vision-Rider member[s] for the price of shipping.

you have a buy & sell, what more do you need. If i have extra parts that someone asks for, i can ship them for cost of shipping. I need a new seat cover, if someone has one, I am willing to trade for it. ET

I'd really like to see it and I think if used properly it can be a great thing. I'd create it for only registered members and if things don't work out like hoped you can always shut it down.

I believe that if I have a part that I'm not using and if someone needs it I just send it for shipping cost and hope that other will keep the good karma going.

sounds like a re-birth is in order for the Pay it forward forum. I have a couple of things taking up space in my limited garage storage. If we all use it! and don't abuse it! I think the forum will work.
