Posts: 1066 Peru, IN | Are there any aftermarket grips out there that are plug n play with the Vision heat? I DON'T want to rewire anything nor do I want to add any additional controller. I have less than 1000 miles on my '12 so I doubt I'll wear these out any time soon but I'd still like to look to the future. You never know when something will be on sale. |

| Never have found them. There are some keaters for $150 and then you have to buy grips but grips with air pockets don't heat as well.
You can wire them to your switch but you only get low and high and no in between
Check Kuryakyn in the gold wing section |

| You would need to find a set of dual element heated grips to use the built in switch without rewiring things. The high low switch on the console doesn't vary resistance, it merely throws current down either of two wires. One wire goes to a lower resistance heating element in the grips, and the other goes to the set of higher resistance elements.
Most aftermarket grips have a single heating element though, so you would need to vary the current supplied. I did this with the heated Avon grips. While they come with their own controller, I didn't use it. I instead wired full power to the high side of the panel switch, and the low side of the switch routes through a pulse width modulator, so I actually have variable heat on the low side. You can use a resistor though to get a single low setting off of the factory switch as well. |

Posts: 208 Wichita, Kansas | Four years ago I installled a $40 heater set from California touring (My 08 base came w/o heated grips). I used a new vision grip heater switch. You just pull the grips, the mylar pc heaters glue down to the bar, and connect to the stock switch. Still working perfect. Dual heat levels and all. High will be too hot if it's over 30 or so. Just 'cause it ain't factory don't mean it has be expensive or not work good.

Posts: 1066 Peru, IN | Hmmm...as long as it would work the same as OEM, I'm good. And if you're the same person who came up with the brake light/turn signal mod (where you keep all 4 brake lights), two thumbs up. First mod I did to my new Vision. |

Posts: 208 Wichita, Kansas | That's me. These things work great. Mylar film with dual heater coils and industrial adhesive. Thick as a 3x5 card. The hardest part is pulling the old grip. Just be sure to leave enough slock in the wire for throttle movement. With the factory replacement switch I used, you can't tell the difference unless you look real close and seee where I had to trima l;ittle piece of grip edge to clear the wire on the bottom. |

Posts: 1066 Peru, IN | I'll have to start looking for some nice aftermarket grips on sale. I have less than 1k miles on my Vision so I'm good for a while yet but it's nice to know there are other options now. I just couldn't give up my heated grips. |

Posts: 395 Moravia, IA | Depends on how often you ride.....in one year mine started disintegrating ......and getting "sticky". That was at about 40K miles.
They still work great but leave black crap all over your hands. I use both Grip Puppies or heat shrink tubing (depends on what kind of grip Im wanting that month) over them......cause the stock grips are to pricey in my opinion. |

Posts: 208 Wichita, Kansas | The heaters have nothing to do with the grips. You pull off the stock grips, put the heaters on the bar, and put the grips back on over them. My stock grips are 4 years old and still look new, even with the heaters installed underneath. |

Posts: 1066 Peru, IN | I wonder how the aftermarket heaters work with some of the thicker (i.e. ISOs) grips. Seems like there's more rubber to warm up. OTOH, once they get warm, they might keep the heat longer. |

Posts: 208 Wichita, Kansas | I've wondered about that myself. I have the stck grips over the heaters, but on high they get pretty darn warm! I think they would be acceptable on the custom grips with some billet parts. The heat should transfer faster even though there is more thermal mass. But, being metal, the surface may cool faster if you remove your hands. So far, very few here have even put on the after market heaters (I'm the only one I've seen who admits to it), so there is really no History to look at. So - try it and let us know how it works. Most of us will applaud you for at least trying and adding to our accumulated knowledge, and one or two will call you an idiot for putting on non-OEM parts since Victory engineers always know what's best for you. ;-) |

Posts: 1066 Peru, IN | Heh. Like I said, my OEM grips are brand new so I won't dive in just yet but if I find some grips I like over the winter, I'll probably do it in the spring. I don't want to destroy a brand new set of factory grips but they really are generic looking (although they're pretty comfortable). I wonder if the stock grips are reusable? Or do you have to cut them off? |

Posts: 208 Wichita, Kansas | I've seen posts which claim that a compressed air nozzle will break the seal and allow removal by expanding them away from the bars but that didn't work for me. However, a 9" x 1/4" common screwdriver between the grip and the handlebar, gently applied, will break the seal and allow (after much twisting, pulling and a few choice words) the grip to be removed intact. When reinstalling the grip, it depends on the fit. If the grip is tight, as were the stock grips over the heater pads, I simply put a couple of dabs of silicone rubber on the bar ends which acted as a lube when installing the grips, but then as an adhesive once they were in place. Four years later they still look new and they haven't moved a bit. And I only used a little silicone rubber so they could be removed in the future without too big a hassle. |

| If you get air pocket grips like Kuryakyn grips they don't heat up like sold rubber grips. But they do heat up. There is this Heat Daemon company that are great. I talk to them and he said with a two way switch he said wire the high to the high and then test witch low you wanted. Cause there come with 4 levels. They work great. You want the ones for harley 1" bars cause there the right length. You can read how to wire them before you buy.
