Got a bit of bad news about my 2010 Cross Country. According to the dealer, the oil leak in the front cylinder is a pinhole in the cylinder casting. And wouldn't you know it, it's a month out of warranty. Victory told the dealer they wouldn't cover it because it is out of warranty, so I've sent a couple of emails to Victory to plead my case. So far, no response. Anyone have any experience defective castings or similar?

JB Weld? Can you easily get to the area and clean it, and apply JB Weld? Don't laugh, JB Weld is incredible stuff....

I hate to say this but your emails to Mother Vic will fall on death ears, unless they have changed their ways!

Drifter, sorry of your situation, there are those here and on theVMC who have to get face to face with Polaris to get matters rectified. While it may be out of warranty, I would go a more aggressive approach to contact Polaris, maybe through a lawyer. I don't what the outcome may be, but I do remember reading of two bikes with pinholes in the block, so a precedence is set. I don't know what all this means legally, but I'm sure it will help Polaris take notice, if nothing else.

I know I would be more aggressive in my approach. If there's a pinhole in the casting, it was there when you bought the bike and simply took awhile to show up. I honestly don't think Vic could win this if you pursue it through your states legal system.

So the "defect" was there from the start since it was said to be in the casting? when was the oil leak first noticed?

Willtill is right, I used JB Weld to fix a leak in the front cylinder of my VTX 1800 due to porosity causing seepage in a pocket between the fins. The key is to clean the area thoroughly, I leaned my bike on it's side and let the area soak in alcohol for a day. Then dry the area really good and apply the JB Weld. When I sold the bike after 9 years and 59,000 miles it was still dry. I also fixed an air compressor with JB weld when one of the bearings let go. I reground the crank to fit a smaller diameter sleeve bushing and glued that bushing into the hole where the needle bearing had been. That compressor lasted another five years before the crank finally gave up, the bushing was still fine and solid in the block.

Keep us informed, that is a ( terrible for you ) but interesting case on Polaris product liability. All castings are imperfect and will fail sometime, but three years ?? that's a very short lifespan and not normal.

I had a pinhole oil leak due to a faulty casting in my 2008 Vision. I got the forward cylinder replaced under extended warranty about a year ago.

GET A LAWYER! A defective part is not a warranty issue from my perspective. It's a defect in the part and the manufactoring/inspection process. THis should be handled without any issues at all. But since they are not handling it, let your lawyer deal with the dealer (yea, he's on the hook also as he sold you the bike) and Ma Vic. Should be a piece of cake for the lawyer and he should easily recover fees for himself.

Dang rookies. Us old timers remember when Vic had problems like this with the old "hammer" motors. Pete developed a leak and come to find out it was bad threads with the head studs. A Heli-coil and Lloyd fixed it quick. Also the old engines would develop a gasket leak around the cam tension covers.
Where did your dealer send the head to have the porosity test done? I don't know any dealers that do it in house.
I suggest getting a second opinion before investing in a lawyer.

So your oil leak started in the last 30 days?
