Posts: 62 San Diego, CA | Looking to add a GPS to my XCT, but so many choices (motorcycle GPS, auto GPS, GPS APP for smart phone, etc) out there, not sure which way to go. Can't see dumping like $700 for a motorcycle GPS, but would like to have something weather proof as I'm starting to do longer rides, and will be doing the USA 4 Corners in May. I do need BT, and all of North America Maps as I will be poking up into Canada for a bit.
What does everyone else use?
Thanks |

Check with the local Canadian Counsel for a more complete list of do's and don't do's |

Posts: 3773 Pittsburgh, PA | i completely GAVE UP on motorcycle gps units i have owned (4-5) and they all lasted about 1.5-2 yrs.. then failed in one way or another.. Now i use only automotive gps units or my android smartphone with google maps. I use the android because it acts as a gps and internet/mp3 radio.. i have used my android over 7000 miles in ALL weather conditions. if it rains i just simply use a sandwich bag upside down.. for when i used to use my $99 garmin gps i did the same thing.. i will NEVER pay for a unnecessary motorcycle gps. |

| Do as you wish but I will always recommend a motorcycle-specific Garmin Zumo, particularly for the ability to plan complex routes.
FWIW, our Garmin Zumo 450 lasted for almost 70,000 miles over 4 years before it crapped out. Turns out it was just a bad digitizer screen and I was able to fix it myself, good as new for about $25. |

Posts: 3773 Pittsburgh, PA | Google maps can plan any route you want and thou can do it on your pc. You can also cache your maps to your android as well as now with android 4.1.1 use Google now to follow your route then as it detects traffic it can warn you then reroute you based on your preset settings. I saw a article a few months ago that said Garmin has been taking a serious hit financially because of smartphones and Google maps. There is no Need to purchase a $500-$900 motorcycle GPS when If you have a smartphone You can do everything plus more.. (gigs and gigs worth of mp3s, internet radio. If a motorcycle GPS was around $150 $200 I might buy one. But not when they cost what they do and my smartphone does that plus more or when you can use a cheapo car GPS. |

Posts: 1229 Rancho Cucamonga, CA | The problem I had using a cell phone as my gps, was keeping the power plugged in without the vibration destroying the connection at the phone. The only thing that worked long time was tapeing the two together, but not real practical. I know have two Samsung phones that can only be charged now by wrapping the chord around them 3 times so the connection is jammed forward. |

I have used it on a few trips and I don't remember any sunlight issues.
