Posts: 1365 Central Maryland | What type of paint is on the radio/ignition switch console; I have the gloss black one. Is it lacquer or enamel?

The serious restrictions on spraying lacquers has put a real crimp in classic car restorations businesses since they don't look 'right' painted with enamels (especially the new, water based 'two stage' paints). In some states you can't get lacquer and don't get caught by the emmissions cops spraying 'bootleg' out of state lacquers.

Posts: 1365 Central Maryland | Well Synster... that is one hell of a fact packed answer. Thank you.
Anyone else? The reason why I am asking; is because I am wondering why it scratches so easily; but then seems to flake off near the mounting holes. |

| go out and look at your door handles on your car you'll see scratches finger nails are sharp.
You could go to a body shop and have them buffed out. Doing it by hand will not really get it.
You could have it sandblasted and power coated. It way tuffer
Go to the net and look for a black vinyl wrap and that will do it for sure |

Posts: 106 Clinton, CT | I was actually thinking about painting the console as well, but looking at using the "bed liner" spray. Duplicolor and Rustoleum both make a spray with most reviews indicating the Rustoleum being a bit more smooth finish.
Still toying with the idea but the scratches really make my OCD flare up...

Brilliant! May be a good solution on the tops of the bags and the nose as well...

| Just to let you know. If you repaint, you CAN paint enamel over lacquer but NOT lacquer over enamel!

| Okay, I can see it now. Discovery Channel presents "Lacquier Bootleggers" Secne 1 take 1: 2 old car guys in garage being interviewed about running a load of Lacquer paint finish and supplies to the closest car show. Man opens truck, pulls back tarp and wham: Gallon jugs of Lacquer!
Now that's programing! |

| Hello
A few years ago I had that panel, the two front aluminum grilles, and the two aluminum engine cowlings all black anodized. Looks great.

| Had my console and front trim powder coated black shortly after buying mine in 08. Still looks great with a black bike.

| Mine is powdercoated black. Hard to scratch and easy to buff out those that show up. However I am having Hydrographs added this winter. |
