Posts: 1365 Central Maryland | Just noticed this a couple of days ago with my spaceship:
Had let it sit for two weeks since I was riding my Rocket. When I went to start my Vision a couple of weeks ago on the side stand; hear a very distinct knocking/tapping noise and it eventually went away. I haven't heard it since on subsequent cold starts.
Fresh oil change w/Ma Vic oil about 500 miles ago; oil is at full mark on dipstick; about 15,500 mostly interstate miles on engine.
Someone posted previously on this forum that they would rather stand the bike straight up on cold starts; to ensure that the oil pump had a adequate supply of oil at the bottom of the crankcase; rather than have it all shifted to the left side while on the side stand. Does that really matter (not sure where the oil pickup is in the engine)?

| Ticking comes from either the hydraulic lifters in the rocker arms or from the cam chain tensioner bolts.
Some bike when sitting for some time the oil will drain out of them. So when you start the bike yes you 'll get ticking till they pump up with oil.
Not that big of deal un less it gets louder and doesn't go away.
Even if start bike on kick stand the oil pump is submerged in oil |

| I wonder if something like LUCAS OIL additive would help this? |

| I have heard that same noise on my Vision, and with other brands of bikes I have owned, and it's always been the lifters. The "ticking" noise should go away within 5 to 10 seconds. On any cold start, the worse thing you can do is rev up RPM's right away. Victory recommends letting the engine idle for one minute before taking it up past idle. These long stroke motors like a gentle cold start up.

| Forgot to add, it has nothing to do with your oil, or oil additives. The ticking noise are the hydraulic lifters being pumped up with oil, and that's a good thing! Victory's carry more oil than most cars, 4.5 to 6 quarts, so starting them on the side stand is simply not a problem. |

| I once saw a write up from Lloyd that suggest that he always starts a bike with some throttle applied, and holds it for a few seconds at 2k or more to make sure there's plenty of oil pressure. He never simply starts a bike at idle rpms.
I have been doing this for several months and it seems to make a difference. Immediate oil pressure!

Posts: 42 Bella Vista, AR | I hadn't thought about the lifters ticking on startup, although mine does it too. When the weather turns cooler, I get a rhythmic tapping from the left side of the engine/crankcase area until the bike warms up good. After the first few days of hearing this, I noticed that it quits after the first pull of the clutch lever. I thought maybe this was the sound Will may have been referring to. |

Posts: 8144 New Bohemia, VA | Look, this is very characteristic of the Vic motor, at least mine anyways. I had a strong tapping for about 3 days once, it finally cleared itself up. I've grown use to the ticking and tapping, especially close to the oil change. Be very careful of ANY additives to your oil on a wet clutch. Getting ready to blow a 150,000 miles and the motor is still very strong and stable. I use Lucas blend now and no longer recommend anything but the recommended semi-synthetic oil. |
