Speakers were the first upgrade I did to my vision. I got the J&M speakers, bought them on E-Bay for what I thought was a very reasonable price. I think they make a huge difference in the quality of the sound, and volume. I highly recommend the upgrade.

Ditto the J&M.  They offer more clarity and more volume than the stock speakers.  I bought 2-pairs at the Laughlin, NV River Run J&M Booth this year and have been running them for @ 5 months.  They are more efficient than the stock speakers and are a direct replacement for the stock speakers (no mods to mounting or wiring harness necessary).

I haven't replaced any yet. I would think four is better than two.

I personally am more fond of the Polk DB series of speakers. My opinion, better build quality and specs. They are waterproof, marine grade speakers. I will be purchasing these and then see if they need an amp, just for better bass.
Polk makes a very good speaker and very efficient. Good response and aurally pleasing. I have heard, seen and used the polk line just not this exact model. Look like they would fit direct drop in. I was even thinking of getting the separates in this line and attach it on the outside of the speaker grill, I think it would still blend.

When I was looking crutchfield even had them buy 1st set and get second set half price. I thought that pretty reasonable.

pollolittle - 2008-08-07 6:54 AM ...I personally am more fond of the Polk DB series of speakers. ...

FWIW, I tried the  Polk Audio db521 5-1/4" marine speaker in my Vision (tested with 1 Polk and 1 J&M).  They are heavier and look like they are built much better than the J&M, but ...

1)  They are too deep for the front of the Vision.

2)  The speaker's spade terminals are too small causing the female connectors to fall off without modification.

3)  Are rated at 93dB sensitivity, but produce less volume output than the J&M.

I like Polk as well, had them in a car system a while ago.  If the Vision had a better amplifier and the Polks would fit, the spade plug size issue could be remedied.

HTH,

Tim

too deep as in how. Is it not possible to modify easily to make it fit. I thought they were very close to fitting. Now I need to go find one and see.

The front speakers have a cup-shaped gasketed shroud with 4 screw connectors.  The speaker pushes this shroud about 1 inch into the fairing, thus moving the screw connectors 1 inch away and creating a gap for water to leak in behind.

If you want to use these speakers, you will have to devise a new way to screw the speakers in because there is nothing for the screws to bite into.  You will also have to the moisture coming in from the fairing going into the back of the speaker and possibly leaking into the front of the console.

Also, remember the decrease in volume unless you are using an external amp.  I wish RadioSound would have added pre-amp outs so external amps could be added in a clean manner.

HTH,

Tim

I Ditto the comments of TimS on the depth of the front fairing as a limitation. The rears however have plenty of room.

I too needed to upgrade/ replace my speakers early on.
One day I got impatient and bought what I thought would work out.

I Installed a set of "Hertz" in the trunk and a set of Pioneers in the fairing. The Hertz were too deep to fit the front.

The Hertz need more power to drive and the Pioneers are a bit "tinny" sounding.

Overall it's not a real good balance and the base is not there although the clarity is very good from the Pioneers.

In retrospect the J&M solution may have been the best alternative to the stock set.

If I did install an amp I am sure that it would be a substantial improvement.

Any one have pics and details of an amp install in there Vision?

Does the same speaker set fit the fairing and the trunk? So just order 2 sets to swap out all 4?

August 28 thru Sept. 1. Cherokee, North Carolina. The Sleep Inn is the official meet hotel, and the Wolfe Campground is the official campers site for the meet. this is the national meet, will be well attended. There is an actaul barbeque trailer going to be there. Rides, fun, etc...I have been excited about this one for the past 2 months. Only 21 days left.

By the way, Lloyd (Victory horsepower guru) will be there with his trailer. Make an appointment soon or you will not get in. My appointment for my Vision is 9:00 Friday morning, getting fuel controller and dyno tune to go along with my current stage 1 and Lloyds diffuser....At a minimum. I am really hoping for more stuff, but not sure if it will be ready by then for the Visions...

If you look at the J&M website, they show 2 separate listings for front and back speakers and 2 part numbers (FSPU and RSPU).

http://www.jmcorp.com/SeeProducts.asp?PF=34

I really don't know what the difference is, but for the J&M either should fit front or back.

Ditto the prior comment that the trunk has more depth for deeper speakers.

The rear speakers can be changed out using just allen wrenches.

The front speakers need allen wrenches and a socket wrench.  You have to take off the fairing access panel.  Remove the mirrors.  Remove the silver bezel around the speedo and tack.  Then remove the 2 black perforated speaker covers that the mirrors mount on top of.

Open up the trunk and look at the top of the rear speaker housing.  With the trunk open, you should be able to remove to allen screws and then tilt the speaker housings forward.  You may have to wiggle them a bit.  Once they are forward, you should be able to replace the speakers.

Please note that the mirrors have 1 allen button head screw and one hex head nut to remove them.

The front speaker grills have 2 allen button head screws under the mirror and 1 allen screw under the silver bezel.

If you are going to wrench on your bike, it would be a good idea to get a copy of the service manual.

Tim

OK - Just finished the J&M Installations in 98 degree heat. Born in Houston but never get use to the heat.

All I can say is that Victory uses installers with little hands to be able to get that bolt in the back of the mirror once removed. After struggling for a few minutes, i think it was a combination of me disjointing my shoulder, raising my leg above my head and cursing a bit louder to finally get it started. But Kudos for the designers who made the front cowling inside pocket not so deep that you can not fish out bolts and tools when you drop them trying to put the freaking bolt back on.

At least I did the back ones first which were a snap. The front ones were a bit tricky but only because I did not know where the snaps were on the Gauge Bezel and was extra careful not to break it pulling it off. Someone said use a plastic putty knife and that did the trick.

And I noticed a sound difference the first time i fired it up.

Richard

I swaped out my OEM speakers for the J&M ones. I had the usual issues changing the speakers out. Had to fish for the spacer on the rear speaker. On the front speaker I had to glue the little rubber things, they fell off when I removed the OEM speakers. Not a real difficult install just a bit cramped in some areas. The new speakers sound clearer and richer. A noticible difference but not overwhelming. I think the cost was worth the improvement. If you want mega sound you might need to look at the Hog Tunes from Ness. I like the J&M upgrade and currently satisfied and would have to hear the Hog Tunes before buying them. One side note J&M now makes a cord that fits the Vision. I think a purchase of a integrated headset would be nice. The Victory OEM headset is OK but after hearing the J&M one I think I would rather have it.

The 2009 Visions have "upgraded speakers" as outlined in the sales info. It would be interesting to hear if there was a difference and whether 2008 Visions can be retrofitted.
