Posts: 725 Reno County, KS | Hey, I just had a fleeting thought last night and remembered I was gonna ask and see what/how/if people were changing thier oil when on the road for LONG road trips (like 3-4K miles). Do you just let it slide? I don't wanna do that but if I must, I will. Maybe I'm over-estimating the hassle involved with getting my bike's oil changed by a dealer when I'm on the road? I was planning on taking the filter with me and buying the oil along the way. Do you do it in a parking lot? How would you dispose of the oil? Most places don't want you working on your vehicle in the parking lot. All shared experience is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
-Will |

Posts: 173 Prescott Valley, AZ | If you are on a trip I doubt that any Victory dealer would not make the time to accomadate a biker in need of an oil change. It only takes a few minutes to do and it is money in their pocket. I'd be shocked to hear that a shop would not be able to find an extra 15 - 20 minutes to make a couple dollars quickly.

Posts: 3773 Pittsburgh, PA | if you couldnt Find a victory dealer in the area that you are riding. you could use a high grade oil and then not have to worry about the 2500 mile oil change interval. BUT then again if you are like ME, you worry about warranty requirements. In my last bike which was a 125ci vtwin i had my oil tested at a lab. (very cheap to do) the reason i did this was to make sure i wasnt wasting my money on Amsoil. what the tests proved was, i was able to extend my oil change intervals alot further than i orginally thought. right before i traded the bike in i was at 7500 miles. when i say extend your oil change interval im not talking to the point there the oil is useless. I mean to where the oil still meets all the specs for visocity and still has enough addtive package and cleaners left to safely run in your scooter. The test cost around $22, but if it gives you piece of mind and the facts you need to save money and not waste it on 2500mile oci then it was worth it. The chances of you finding a victory dealer where you are riding are slim to none. |

Posts: 117 South of Houston Tx | It's good you are thinking ahead, I didn't give it any thought back in June when I headed north on a 3k round trip. When it got to the oil change interval however I started to think about it a bunch, worrying actually. The smell of every stinkin' diesel or oil burnin' peace of crap car that I got behind had me thinking my oil was burning up in my crankcase! With no Victory dealer in hundreds of miles I finally pulled into a Yamaha dealer who happened to have a display of 20-50 Amsoil behind the parts counter. I then found an Advanced Auto Parts store that had the Purolator Pure1 filters, since I was only about about 50 miles from my mothers house, I rode there and while visiting I did my "Ozark Mountain Oil Change". It sure was nice to not have to have that worry the rest of the way home, or even back out of the hills to civilization! |

Where did you get the test kit at? I thought I seen one at a local auto parts store but couldn't find it. I'd like to do that a few times and start experimenting myself. Thanks for all the great info everyone! |

| Just give your bike a oil and filter change prior to departing on the trip. Use Amsoil 20/50 and the Bosch oil fillter then go.... You should be able to do 5k easy on the Amsoil without worry. My advice is to buy a quart of Amsoil to carry along with you on the trip just in case you find you need to add a bit (I had to add a bit after the first 2500 of the 5k trip).
ps... I wouldn't normally endorse/suggest/recommend ANY oil but I have run the Vic, Mobil1, an the Amsoil in mine since I first purchased my Vision. The Vic oil is good but does need changed at 2500, the Mobil1 did NOT extend the interval at all and NEEDED changed at 2500 (shifting became notchy). I'm currently at 5k with the Amsoil and the bike is running smooth as silk, shifting smooth, etc... but I will be changing it out this week. I simply won't ride the oil beyond 5k unless I absolutely must.... |

| I have Amsoil last 5k with no problems.
I think the toughest problem is finding a shop open say on Sunday or a holiday. Warner's opened his shop on Sunday for us back when we rode out for the Wings and Wheels years ago. Rice Victory does all maintenance during Sturgis but the only down side is waiting up to 2-1/2 hours to get it done. Not their fault just that many bikes in line.
Have fun on your trip. |
