Sparta, WI | When we rode out to Sturgis this year I found my riding skills tested daily. When we first arrived and I was caught up in all of the visual displays downtown with bikes everywhere I looked, I came into a tight right hand 90 degree slow turn onto a side street and drifted close to the outside lane of the side street I was turning onto. There were 4 bikes lined up at that stop sign and I started freakin out a bit. Drifted way to close for comfort to the other bikes. I pushed her into saftey but had to check my undies at the next stop. I think it can happen to anyone and it slapped me up along the head, woke me up and drew me back into the basics of riding.
The first time I learned anything about riding a cycle it was while studying for my cycle license when I was 16 years old. Well, that was 38 years ago. The next real lesson I had was at the Abate MS Training back in 02. I went not only to learn but to get my insurance rate lowered. It was a great course but still 6 years ago and I want to brush up, wake up and recharge my riding skills. The internet is a great place to learn and remind ourselves of good riding technique. I have been surfing for Motorcycle Riding Technique and am finding it extremely helpful, not only with new pointers but reminding me of what I already have been taught but has faded from my memory.
I ride alot. I live up north and have still managed to put 7700 miles on a motorcycle so far this year. The last two weeks, because I have brushed up on riding technique I feel I am a better and more "in control rider" both alone or in a group.

The Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) puts on some excellent beginner, as well as advanced motorcycle safety classes. Here is the link for your state:

I've ridden for many years like you, and take the advanced class every few years. It ALWAYS saves my butt within a month or so of taking the class. My wife now pilots her own bike, in addition to riding as passenger with me. We will BOTH be taking the MSF advanced class next spring on our own bikes.

Hey StarChief, I bought my Vision at Sport Rider too. I hope to make it up there on Saturday. We have a big Memorial Ride in Sparta starting at 8 AM and I am hoping to break away and check out the 09's on Saturday afternoon. Adam said that he organizes some Victory rides on occasion, do you ride with them? Thanks for the heads up. |

Ruskin, Fl | Something else to consider you can do on your own. I purchased the "Ride Like A Pro" DVD produced by a motorcycle cop. With a little practice my ride skills improved dramatically. I can win almost any slow race using the techniques I learned in this video. Anybody can ride a motorcycle at 30 mph, but be able to control your bike at slow speed or in tight quarters shows some skill.

| I mentioned ride like a pro in another thread bt in addition you might pick up a copy of "twist of the wrist" for winter reading. It is a GREAT ride read and when put into practice will make a believer out of you. |

Yes, we go on the rides and led the last one. They're the 2nd Saturday of the month and leave Sport Rider right after they close at noon. Planning to be around there on Sat, too. Adam is getting married in Sept, so be sure to give him a bad time! |

Northeast Ohio | Great info. I have used the http://www.RideLikeAPro.com DVD to really help my control the bike. I am going to pick up the mean streets video too. They also do classes. Hope this helps.

Ruskin, Fl | I also have the mean streets DVD. I liked it, but the I got more out of the ride like a pro (I have number 3) video. I was thinking about taking the class. He is only about an hour from where I live. I still cannot manuver my Vision as well as I would like, but I have put a couple of scratches on the bottom of my floorboard. I guess I'm getting there. The class is $150 for four hours. As soon as I have a couple of extra bucks, I'll be there. |
