Posts: 118 Spfld, IL but temp Bay area, CA | I'm coming up on 46K miles and 6 year's old and trying to get a feel for when I should replace the original drive belt. I know the manual says you should change at 30K but I did not.
Am I probably safe to wait until 60K and have it done with the 60K maintenance or should I consider changing it prior to this?
Thoughts? |

Posts: 482 Beer Collins, Colorado (there is no fort) | I ran my TC's belt up to around 60K & replaced at a rear tire change before a long tour just for peace of mind and wanting to have a spare- the belt looked great-it's a personal call, I would rather change one in my shop than on the side of the road. |

I would change the belt every 6 years regardless of the miles. Regular inspection will identify anything that will require you change the belt before then. Anything over 6 years I believe you are taking a big chance. |

| My 99 road glide had a hundred thousand on the stock belt. It was the same size as the Vic belts. Sold it to a guy and he put thirty thousand on it and sold it with the stock belt.
Rylan from the Vic shop says to clean it with soap and water and scrub it with a tooth brush every oil change. He said they will last a long time. |

Posts: 8144 New Bohemia, VA | Different materials for different belts and applications. Ours has kelvar in it making it a very long-lasting, strong, and durable belt. However, heat and the elements, as well as age will cause it to deterorate. I can agree cleaning the belt would help, but I don't think that would really provide a substantial benefit. Who's got time to scrub the belt, I don't even have time to wash the bike... Oh, and I think your salesman has his belt too tight. Victory seems to like a loose belt.

I will most likely wait until the next time I need a rear tire in 6-8 K miles.
Thank you all! |

| When h-d cam out with the belt back in 84 they said replace it at 25 thousand back then they had the same width belt as we do now. Now they say inspect it at 80 thousand and they have gone to a narrower belt then ours.
I can see a belt break if you have it to tight or even to loose |

Yep, I agree. Mine broke just over 50k. Looked in great shape. Dealer said due to our dry climate here in NM, and... My CT. Said there is no 'give' like with a motorcycle tire, so more stress on belt.

Posts: 133 , AR United States | The dealership I bought my bike from talked me into a new belt at 40,000 miles. I finally said ok, but I want the old one. When I asked about changing fork oil he said they usually don't unless it's leaking. |

Being a darksider myself, I've heard some great ones over the years Boots, but this one, coming from your dealer? I'm not sure I could even contort my face to make the proper "dumbass" look if someone told me that, lol. |

Posts: 8144 New Bohemia, VA | I wouldn't laugh too hard, while it seems absurd, it is not without merit. There is more contact patch, therefore more drag. Why don't they put skinny tires on the rear of drag cars and bikes. Whether it has a profound affect on the belt, that is another story. However, it could very well be "the straw that broke the camel's back". I'm not anti-car tire, considered it many times in the past myself. I'll leave the rest of my opinion to myself.
All of us got to consider there are many dynamics in all of this and other things. What will do well for one, my not do well for another. I am, verified, the worst in taking care of my Vision, shamefully. However, mine continues to roll in great service for me on a daily basis. Where others have been meticulious in the care and feeding of their Vision and had to give it up because of one problem after another. Take all that is said with a grain of salt and come to your own conclusion. I have mine. Happy Motoring!!! |

While I have followed your softened approach to the whole subject over the years, there's still many of us who actually run the CT's and know, vs many who've never and think they know. It'll always be that way, long after I'm gone. Keeps things lively!

You may have me beat on mileage but , I don't know if you beat me on "taking care" of the Vision. I didn't put plugs or air filter in mine until 3 times the rcommended interval. I have been mocked and berated for not changing out my good original battery. Made people fighting mad that i run my rear tire too far before changing. Never changed fork oil or clutch or steering head bearing or wheel bearings (yes, I know there would be a difference if I did some of these). Never changed brake fluid. Mine just keeps on spinning like a top. Lord willing, I will hit 85,000 this weekend. God has favored me and I pray over my stuff, got mocked for that too. I will be unashamed so He will be unashamed. One thing I've noticed too, a lot of people don't think for themselves , they blindly follow the manual and, to those people, if you don't , you're an idiot or an unsafe menace to society. Nothing wrong with following the manual if you have the money and time. I have discovered through actual experience that there is also nothing wrong with not following the manual. |

Actually, the dealer has been great, and called Victory asking about the early demise of my belt. They are the ones that asked him 1st is he running a wider tire, and 2nd is he running a CT. So info really came more from Ma Vic.

And with less drinking you aren't as likely to confuse these activities!
You don't want to be teasing your bride...

Boots, I too have a good dealer. I had a ABS issue on the rear sensor of my 2011. Dealer called the factory for help. Victory told them the issue was directly related to the CT and that ABS couldn't work properly with the CT, LOL. It was a pinched wire in ABS lead of the sensor, had nothing to do with a tire at all. |
