Posts: 261 Sugar Land, TX (Outside of Houston) | Anyone find an alternative for just laying the Battery Tender Connection Cable in the cowling down by the battery? Sure would be nice if there was something we could hard mount to the frame up front or even drill through the cowling for a perminent installation. Then just open the cover and plug it in. not having to fish for the cable in the cowling.
I have nighmares of the cable dropping down under the bike and a tire grabbing it and ripping it off.

Posts: 59 Pocono Mountains of PA | I just went to my local BMW bike dealer and got the powerlet to batter tender cable and will be usein the powerlet connector in the trunk. That connection is live all the time. That waty I don't need to have the pigtail hanging down from the battery

Now just to see where it would best be placed as a permanent location mount.

Posts: 59 Pocono Mountains of PA | Check out this and you won't need to mount anything. Just plug it in the trunk powerlet and to the Battery Tender

Posts: 506 Woodland Hills, CA | Has anyone had any experience actually using the Powerlet plugged into the power outlet in the trunk? It sounds like a really easy way to handle this, and while it should work, I would still be interested to know the opinion(s) of those who have actually used it for a while. |

I have used the powerlet to SAE for quite some time. Basically, it is like charging your battery from the cigarette plug. It DOES NOT hurt anything and makes the whole process nice and simple rather than having to even touch the battery.
I HIGHLY recommend doing this...

Posts: 261 Sugar Land, TX (Outside of Houston) | I still do not feel comfortable shooting juice backwards through the trunk plug. If a power surge happens up front with the Battery Tender, it goes directly to the battery terminals.
If it shuold happen while plugged into the trunk plug, we do not know what lies in-between that plug and the battery. Unless someone knows it is directly connected to the battery bypassing the fuse assembly (but probably not).
So I will probably continue charging directly to the battery posts.

Posts: 37 SE Florida | I just looked at the wiring drawing in the service manual and using a battery tender through the trunk powerlet plug should not be a problem. There are two fuses between the plug and the battery 25 amp and 40 amp and the battery tenders only put out something in the range of 500 milliamp or less, the only electronics on the same circuit is the CD changer and the battery tender is not going to hurt that. |

Posts: 460 Centennial, CO | I would be interested to know what is on the circuit for the powerlet in the compartment under the handlebars.
I don't have a service manual so this information is not currently available to me. I anyone knows where I can pick up a soft copy (PDF or other) of the manual online, I would love to get hold of that.
Thanks! |
