ROCHESTER,NY | Has anyone stripped the threads going into the opening for the oil drain plug. If so, what tap did you use? What was size of new bolt? |

Perry Hall, MD | All too common. My first oil change and the plug wouldn't come out, crossed thread from the factory - easy fix - check below thread. One suggestion I would make is to put grease on the tap to hold any shavings and keep them out of the oil pan. Helicoil did wear out last year and I had to extract the old and put in one of the extras that came with the kit.

ROCHESTER,NY | Thanks for the kick backs. I did the re-tap. Put about two quarts of oil in, left over night. Leak. Going to put some rtv on the washer/gasket. Try that,maybe a crush washer when I go get the rtv. |

What if your in the middle of know where or doing 70mph down the interstate and that rtv lets go one you.
Now you have a rear tire covered with oil. The tire will probably slide out from under you and you will crash.
Sorry to ruin your thinking but dam man fix it the right way

| Do the job right or don't do it at all.
If you did a search, there has been a few owners had this happen and they did the repair the right way. Themselves or a mech. |

ROCHESTER,NY | Why would the rtv "let go". No pressure build up. I do understand about it leaking, and thought of that when I posted. I'm trying to get back in the saddle after this long winter. I don't have the coin to have a shop do it. |

| i did the timecert, not a drop in last 60k miles since repair. i have the kit with inserts left. pay for shipping to and from you and i will send it to you so u can do the repair right.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA | When I did the Timesert, I removed the dipstick and connected an airhose to that side at 10psi, just to keep a little positive pressure so any shavings would blow out instead of drop in. I also did all the work with the bike on its tipovers to get a better angle. Make sure you have red loctite, or use JBweld applied like loctite, like I did. Get yourself a good tap handle as well, the kit doesn't include one.
The fix was a complete success and I feel more confident now at oil changes knowing I'm tightening the drain bolt onto steel threads now instead of aluminum.

Pittsburgh, PA | i just saw my First vision stripped thread today... guy from NY got a flat.. i went to try and help him , but he said he already called progressive for a tow.. and then i noticed it.... drip drip drip.. from the drain plug.. i saw it was also double gasketed .. the owned said he did that because its stripped... i cant say i would go on a multi state drip knowing you have a stripped plug and your not sure if your double gasket idea would work or not... felt bad for him.. |

Moncks Corner, SC United States | Happened on my first oil change. The plug just spun after trying to get it out. Took it to dealer for warranty repair. Not covered. I had the shop (once they got the plug out) just tap a larger hole. Now I have a standard hex head drain plug with no leaks in 2 yrs. Now much easier to access and remove. |

I'd do anything for love, but I won't do that. I've rode with tires less than par; plugged rear tire (twice); no back brakes; exhaust leaks galore; a busted rear shock; steering bearing shot; and a blown headgasket (GoldWing). I feel bad for him too. If he can't afford to fix a drain plug, he can't afford a new engine either. The things we do for the love of riding....

Glendale, AZ United States | I think the torque spec for the drain plug is only like 5 pounds and oil filter is like 3/4 turn by hand to tighten after it makes contact. Toward you to loosen the drain plug and away from you to loosen oil filter. 
Just having some fun at your expense. I hope you get her fixed up and rolling down the road soon. |

Springfield Mo. | Mine was drilled out, retapped and a Harley plug put in, so my Vic has some Harley DNA in it. Not sure if that is good or not. Didn't get me in any special clubs. |

| don't know if you know Kevinx. He's a top motor builder down in Florida.
He never takes the plug out. Over the years to many have striped.
Now he uses a pump to get the oil out |

Austin, Texas | Pretty certain that was the M12 X 1.5 Timesert kit for oil pan repair. You re-use the original Victory drain plug in the Timesert. |
