I found out today that all bike rallys at Myrtle have been eliminated. I am sorry to hear this as I felt Myrtle was quite "civilized" in that there were not too many bikers and nothing was overcrowded. I think that in these tough economic times that it was a short sited deicision and that they will lose not only the revenue from bike week but that folks will not go there for regular vacations or golfing as a result. I know I will not. Other bike friendly locals will benefit instead. I have written the chamber of commerce expressing my disappointment. I hope others will join in doing so.

Great golf...ride most of the year.

Neked women in the summertime.

Who needs Bike Week when you have all that.

That would be the rest of us who need a good excuse to leave the passengers at home while we look at those half-neked(sometimes full neked women) and cruise around remembering how it was before we put on the ball and chain. That's who needs it.

Florida has passed some new laws pertaining to bikes also, better read them before you head to Daytona....Especially the tag law on custom bikes....

Effective October 1, 2008, HB 137 revises the traffic laws to create a few more penalties. This short bill was particularly focused on unsafe motorcycle activities, but it does include a provision for excessive speed. The new law also provides penalties for the first, second, third or subsequent violations. The Distribution Chart found on the FACC website will be updated to reflect the amounts for the first and second offenses in the Traffic section. The third and subsequent offense is classified as a third degree felony with a $5,000 fine and will appear in the Criminal Traffic section of the chart.

New Violations:
316.2085(2) Motorcycle or moped, wheels losing contact with ground
This is classified as a moving violation.
First Offense: the violator must pay $1,000 plus any other costs assessed for a moving violation. Second Offense: the violator must pay a fine of $2,500, plus any other applicable costs assessed for a moving violation. The person's driver license must be revoked for a period of one year.
Third Offense: the violator will be charged with a third degree felony, punishable as provided in ss. 775.082, 775.083, and 775.084, a mandatory fine of $5,000, and the driver license must be revoked for a period of ten years.

316.2085(3) Motorcycle or moped license tag improperly affixed
This is classified as a moving violation.
First Offense: the violator must pay $1,000 plus any other costs assessed for a moving violation. Second Offense: the violator must pay a fine of $2,500, plus any other applicable costs assessed for a moving violation. The person's driver license must be revoked for a period of one year.
Third Offense: the violator will be charged with a third degree felony, punishable as provided in ss. 775.082, 775.083, and 775.084, a mandatory fine of $5,000, and the driver license must be revoked for a period of ten years.

316.1926 (2) A person who exceeds the speed limit in excess of 50 mph or more in violation of ss.
316.183(2) (posted speeds), 316.187(state speed zones), or 316.189 (municipal and county speeds)
This is classified as a moving violation.
First Offense: the violator must pay a fine of $1,000 plus court costs.
Second Offense: the violator must pay a fine of $2,500 plus court costs and the driver license must be revoked for a period of one year.
Third Offense: the violator will be charged with a third degree felony, punishable as provided in ss. 775.082, 775.083, and 775.084, a mandatory fine of $5,000, and the driver license must be revoked for a period of ten years.

And I guess I would be guilty of all three of Fl new laws if I was on the new CORE bike. Glad I'm taking the Vision, where they can only get me for 2 out of 3. ET

Is there a law in MB for loud? If so, how loud is too loud? If drivers would stop text messaging and talking on their cell phones, I wouldn't need loud pipes for them to see me. Gotta make them pay attention somehow.

They did pass a sound level law. Basically, they can enforce it two ways. The first is through a traditional sound meter, 89 decibles, and the other is that it has to be factory EPA certified pipes. Here it is from their website.

2008-77 Amend existing Noise law found in Chapter 14, Article X, Sections 14-240. No loud mufflers; EPA labeling required, or maximum 89 decibels allowed at idle measurement. (effective immediately)

The City's own vehicles do not pass the noise code. And this is one of the only "administrative ordinance" that they will confiscate your bike for. Most of the others are a fine through an administrative court. This court has NO teeth, if you get a ticket, you are a fool to pay. Throw away the ticked, but don't litter.

I gotta tell ya, this confiscation from a city ordinance is shaky to me. I'm in Virginia, and one of the things that we don't generally enforce here, is that if you have a motor vehicle from another state, and you come into Virginia, passing through, or some short stay. ie..you don't live here, then things like dark tint, which is illegal, or not having a state inspection sticker, is something that you can not be fined for. Additionally, I have never heard of anyone having their bike confiscated from a noise ordinance. The tint is a state law, and there is no effort to confiscate a vehicle from that. I would be very interested to see if this is enforced down in Myrtle Beach. Anyone know any Myrtle Beach officers that maybe have an inside scoop on how they are really handling this down there? I could see them reserving this as the a*$hole law, otherwise, the officers would have a full time job of towing bikes.

Also, I'd like to see someone get their bike confiscated and fight the hell out of it. I would think some motorcycle groups would get behind them and challenge the constitutionality (state wise) of seizing a bike for an adminstrative city ordinance. It's pretty bold on the city's part, but I doubt it would hold up, and I would think someone could get an injunction on that ordinance.

Myrtle Beach Resorts To Bold Lies About Rally Cancellation
1/16/2009 - USRiderNews

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When the Mayor and Council of Myrtle Beach couldn't persuade the Horry County Commission to go along with its plan to shut down the motorcycle rallies, they decided to take a different approach. They decided to lie and say the rallies have been cancelled.

On a website set up specifically for the purpose to intimated and discourage any motorcyclists who would attend the event, Mayor John Rhodes writes, "After many years, our residents grew weary of three weeks of noise and traffic congestion each May, and they asked City Council to end the events. As a result, the Harley-Davidson Dealers Association Spring Rally and the Atlantic Beach Memorial Day Bikefest will not be held in Myrtle Beach."

The Mayor insinuates that the City controls the dates and the decision to promote the rally but that is a bald face lie, according to Mike Shank, of Festival Promotions in Myrtle Beach. "we're moving forward with the rally in May and just want to be clear no rally has been cancelled and that everybody who has come to Myrtle Beach in the past is certainly welcome again this May."

The tradition of motorcyclists in Myrtle Beach was started by the Carolina Harley-Davidson Dealers Association and was welcomed in years past as a valuable tourism asset to the businesses in the city. But, recent events and the growth of Black Bike Week, held over the Memorial Day Weekend, has prompted town leaders to find ways to shut out the bikers.

Shank says it's deplorable but a move he expected. He added, "I guess the biggest thing to clarify too is that it's not the city of Myrtle Beach's event. It's not their event to cancel. It's been a community event for 69 years."

Attendance during the October event was down from previous years, but apparently that decrease wasn't enough to satisfy the anti-biker crowd. New regulations, including an unconstitutional helmet law, which is in direct conflict with state law, were enacted to directly intimidate and harass the motorcycle community.

Mayor Rhodes defended the actions of the council saying, "We believe these new laws will make Myrtle Beach a safer and more friendly destination."

In a half hearted attempt to deflect accusations of discrimination against two wheel tourists, Rhodes said, "Myrtle Beach is not anti-biker or anti-motorcycle. We want folks to come on the vehicle of their choice and enjoy all of the things Myrtle Beach has to offer. We are ending the motorcycle-related rallies because they grew too big and lasted too long. The huge rallies even kept visitors away from Myrtle Beach, and that's not good."

Horry County Council members disagree with the Mayor's assessment and have publicly stated that the month of May is a "dead" month and if it were not for the motorcycle tourists, the area would suffer economic hardship, especially in this recessionary economy. Since school is still in session, families do not visit during the month of May.

Shanks said a special website http://www.mbbikeweeks.com/ has been set up to inform and guide motorcyclists who refuse to be intimidated by the council's actions are planning to come to the area during the spring event.

As any motorcyclist who has attended the Cruising the Coast events in years past, there are far more destinations and biker bars outside of the city limits than inside.

On the site set up by the city, Mayor Rhodes attempts to downplay this fact and instead insist that the rallies have been cancelled. In one paragraph Rhodes says that North Myrtle Beach, (a separate town) may not allow outside tents to be set up at the Harley-Dealership in that location. By doing this, he is hoping that bikers will spread the false rumor that the Harley dealership south of town is affected, which is completely false.

Shank said that despite the propaganda machine the city is using, the rally will still be held. "There is a rally, people are welcome, and there's plenty of ways to avoid Myrtle Beach, you know I think the best thing we can do in the Motorcycle Industry is to show up in 2009 and exercise our rights to freedom and participation and hope that everyone does it in a lawful manner and I don't think anyone can complain much about that."

I think the problem I have with all of this is that I dont want to go to a rally and be looking over my sholder all the time to see if I am going to be grabbed for any infractions that an officer may in his or her discretion decide I am committing. I also do not want to always figure out ways to weedle my way aroung the city of MB to get somewhere. I will find other rallys where the envirnoment if more friendly-Laconia, Aspencade, Johnstown etc-there are hundreds to choose from where we can feel comfortable and that our business is appreciated.

Spoken like a true free spirit Probie. Number one, out of my 3 years of continually riding I've never really have wanted to "go to a rally". I like to ride too much and mostly on my own or with folk who ride as I do. The few ride events I have attended were cool, but I wasn't much on the festivities. My plan to visit Myrtle Beach or Daytona or Sturgis, was to ride, look and leave, all within a few hours, not including the ride of course. Basically it would be a stop along the journey, not necessary a destination. I have serveral reasons for this and given any of them, the top one is I can't stand to be in large crowds and having to wait in live for food, porta's, getting back to my bike, stores, blah, blah, blah. I do think it is cool to see so many bikes in one spot and mine be a part of it. But as soon as I park I'm ready to ride again.

What does this have to do with anything. Well, IMHO I think there may be a lot lesser known rallies out there that would be much more enjoyable to attend and mingle then a "got to go or you ain't a biker" rally. I see it this way, it's what Mrytle Beach wants, let them have it, I know I've not missed anything.

With all that said, I would like to hit a Victory Rally, because I would see something that meant something to me, other Vision and Victory riders, and a chance to speak with Mr. Song and say thank you.

Varyder, I am not a big " bike event" guy, but I will say I like Myrtle Beach because if nothing else, it's a good excuse for me to leave home for a couple days. Most of the other rallies are much further away, and I can't always take that much time off. Plus, while I do go to the drag races, because it's just cool to see bikes do a quarter mile standing still, I do more things in the area like play golf, hit bars and see hot women. I'm still going this year beacuse we already booked a room, and we'd lose our money. But for me, MB is more about me getting to hang out with my 2-3 other riding buddies and have a "men behaving badly" week. Who knows if we'll go next year, but it is a shame because it was a reason that I could float to the wife and she'd agree. She thinks I am more of a bike rally guy than I really am. I just need a good excuse to go spend money for a couple of days. She doesn't like bike rallies, so I don't have to worry about her wanting to come!!!

I guess my real moto is that I don't want to spend time away from the wifey or other family. I've got grandchildren in SC, NC and Texas and my parents live in the upper Shenadoah, all great ride destinations, needing no reservations. The wife works as well and has spent the last 8 years on night shift she is finally off and our son is 18, though not of the house. I do like all the cool stuff and plan on going to the drags this spring and summer locally. Our 20 anniversary, I think I'm going to finally get her to ride more than two hours, as we plan on going to Savanah, Ga. in April. Being all that it may be, I'm a rebel at heart as well as a rambler, but both of those ah..em.. qualities wasn't getting me far other than places that I had never seen before. When I took up riding again 3 years ago, I made a promise to myself not to let it get the best of me and be all the time going somewhere that didn't include family. Thus, it is a great excuse to ride to Texas, or SC or NC or the Valley, but to hang out at Myrtle Beach or too many other places that she wouldn't go, then I can't justify it, but that's me. I understand there are plenty out there that focuses on the major destinations, do or die. Sadly, one just got shot, but that just means another one will start.

Man, there I go again, ....zipppppp...tickalock.
