Gainesville Fl Home of the Gators | The problem stems from the squids that mount the tag verically under the tail section of sport bikes. These are the same squids that run when they see cops.
A couple of things to think about......
It is a violation of FEDRAL law to have a verticaly mounted tag, and while most areas do not enfoce this law it is still an equipment violation period.
Unfortunatly you can not just enforce a law in a one sided mannor. This letiginous society we live in has way to many lawyers, and they would have a field day.
This is yet another knee jerk reaction that was caused by someone watching the news, and having a bright idea. It was passed in the back of a bill that had NOTHING to do with motorcycles, and buried so deep most of the legislature never read it. Also since it was in a child safety bill; voting against it would be used against anybody that spoke out. That is the real issue in my mind. This bill would NEVER have passed on it's own
Keep an eye on your states because you can bet your ass some state rep thinks this is a great idea. |

| Only enforceable on bikes registered in FL.... As far as this being a federal violation? I have never seen this horizontal mounting requirement in CRF, but I'd be open to reading it if someone has a reference???? I'm going to have a quick look. |

Ruskin, Fl | Maybe they should concern themselves with car tags cover with plastic. I have seen tinted or so yellowed the plate cannot be read sitting behind them at a light. That doesn't fly in most states even if it's crystal clear. Sorry, pet peeve of mine. |

Colorado | The biggest rallys are in Florida...plain a simply put its an avenue for generating revenue for the local government. Ok...I have to look at both sides...a cop might not see the plate or be able to read it as quickly when this guy race's by....but lets be honest a radio works pretty well and I don't care who you are you aren't that fast. |

Gainesville Fl Home of the Gators | Well now this is a PITA. I have been searching, and have not been able to find the documents that were needed to certify an imported antique Brit bike for use on U.S. road ways. The NHTSA were quite specific about tag placement, and that said tag had to be mounted horizontaly, and in clear view from a position of 10ft back, and 10ft to either side. Now for those of you that say there is no requirements for legal mounting of tags. I invite you to read this snippet found on a law enforcement site. Remember we live in the U.S.A., and there is alegal specification for EVERYTHING.
§ 46.2-716. How license plates fastened to vehicle; altering appearance of license plates.
A. Every license plate shall be securely fastened to the motor vehicle, trailer, or semitrailer to which it is assigned:
1. So as to prevent the plate from swinging,
2. In a position to be clearly visible, and
3. In a condition to be clearly legible.
B. No colored glass, colored plastic, bracket, holder, mounting, frame, or any other type of covering shall be placed, mounted, or installed on, around, or over any license plate if such glass, plastic, bracket, holder, mounting, frame, or other type of covering in any way alters or obscures (i) the alpha-numeric information, (ii) the color of the license plate, (iii) the name or abbreviated name of the state wherein the vehicle is registered, or (iv) any character or characters, decal, stamp, or other device indicating the month or year in which the vehicle's registration expires. No insignia, emblems, or trailer hitches or couplings shall be mounted in such a way as to hide or obscure any portion of the license plate or render any portion of the license plate illegible.
C. The Superintendent may make such regulations as he may deem advisable to enforce the proper mounting and securing of the license plate on the vehicle.

When seatbelts became manditory in B.C. some years back, one of our esteemed legislators thought that motorcyclists should not be forgotten. So the idiot introduced a bill into our Parliament that would require motorcyclists to 'buckle up' before riding.
I recall that at that time, I started a campaign that would require all Motorists to wear a helmet..... |

At 50 over you see those same fines, and punishments on top of the normal ticket. Racing is a HUGE set of laws that include jail time and confiscation, and with DUI.....Well you get what you deserve |

| KevinX sorry bud but you misquoted what I stated. There is NO federal requirement except that the plate must be fastened in such a way as to prevent it coming off. ALL of the codes you posted are STATE laws regarding plate's and mounting. They are ONLY applicable to vehicles registered in THAT state.
So FL may pass a law with regards to license plate mounting that is enforceable for FL registered bikes, BUT it is NOT enforceable on bikes registered in another state.
Another example is tail light flashers that bike riders love to install. While MOST law enforcement agencies will not ticket for this they ARE illegal no matter what state, it is Federal law. However headlite modulators are legal in all 50 states as Federal law overrides state on this matter. Both regulations/restrictions can be found in 49CRF, ch 5. Most MC related stuff can be found in sub para 571... You'll also find those requirements for import bikes in this regulation. NHTSA doesn't have a clue 99.99% of the time.

Gainesville Fl Home of the Gators | Hate to tell you man but the CRF is so convoluted that there is no way you could have completely researched this question in the time you have been alloted. I have thus far found over 270 documents that relate to motor vehivle certification. Many have one item tied to another obsure item.
The info that I was given was from a certification document required to operate a motor vehicle on US roads, and I trust it's regulations far more then a guy running around on a web site. In case you have not noticed our laws are thousands of pages thick, and quite often have many more things in them then the heading might suggest. There is a reason that auto manufactures place tags where they do, and why the HD Nightster does not have a vertical tag. It is because these manufacturers have entire departments that find, and outline the regs that pertain to them. As I said there is pretty much no part of a motor vehicle that does not have clearly defined regulations. When I worked for Subaru I know there were more then 30 required detail requirements for the front doors alone.
Finally just to make sure that you understand one very basic law. While states may not enforce a law on an out of state motor vehicle that is AS MANUFACTURED. They can, and will cite you for items that have been modified from stock, and therefore may be non compliant in the ticketing state. In other words if it did not come that way from the factory. You are at the mercy of the state you are visiting |

Find the minimum shear force allowable on a passenger car front door latch plate for model year 2009, and I will buy you a steak dinner. It is mandated by a federal guideline, and a smart guy like yourself should have no problem finding it  |
