Posts: 446 East TN | OK, looks like my '06 Road Glide is going to sell this week or next...So I will be looking to buy a '09 Vision Tour Premium....
Once I do, what should I expect in the way of break in period?
What should the max RPM be for the motor?
Should I avoid highway speeds or anything in particular?
I have read I should change the oil at 600 miles is this right?
When should I switch to synthetic oil?
(NOT AN OIL DEBATE QUESTION...I AM GOING TO BASED ON MY PERSONAL PREFERENCE Mobil-1 Racing 4T 10W-40 for wet clutch applications) Mobil 1 Racing 4T

I believe the break in is also covered in the owners manual. Basically, run at varied speeds, no hard braking initially. Victory runs & tests each bike on a dyno before the bike leaves the factory. They get it up to highway speeds, so no worries there.

The break in will take you a while unless you are lot of miles rider. The first 500 is the worst. One you are done with that you will need your service. Now, keep in mind during this time that the engine will sound HORRIBLE. Much like it is about fall apart from the inside out. This IS normal! My dad made a comment the first weekend I brought my bike to show him. He took it for a ride and said, "hell, if its that noisy, you WILL need to get some HUGE pipes to cover the noise". At 500 miles it started to quiet down but wasn't quiet like I know it now.
I looked online for the service manual to tell you the next interval for service. I THINK it was 1000 miles and then 2500. I am already at 9000 so I am well past the point of which my two brain cells in my head can actually remember.
Here is a consideration. Talk with the service shop. My shop has a program for 1500 bucks that allows me unlimited service on my bike for 3 years. I have more than broken even on this deal. The first service was fairly expensive (If I remember it was around 650 bucks or so) and the rest have been around 350. Going this route has been a tremendous thing for me as I just roll in, hand over the bike for a couple of hours and back on the road I go with just signature.
I say the last paragraph because I SUCK at maintenance. I mean I can do it. I just find that I hate doing it and dropping in for a cup 'o joe and some chit chat with the boys while the service team works on it is much more worth my time. I don't get dirty and when its done I can just go ride.
Oh...I am not sure I said, but the bike is so quiet after the 2500 mile mark that my dad thought I took the bike in and had some work done on the engine. So, don't be surprised for the first 1000 or so.
The last thing I can and DO recommend. READ the owners manual. It will answer ALL of the question you posted. It is your best guide and if followed, I think everyone would agree, you should have zero issues with the Freedom106 which to me so far has been a bullet proof and HIGH quality engine! |

+1
I overshot my breakin oil change about 500 miles and I have had no ill effects. The 500 miler I believe is no more than an inspect and an oil change. I wish I would have saved 300 bucks in labor for the dealer to "inspect" because the Vision is so simple to work on. Just don't take the motor mounts bolts out unless you know what you are doing.
Happy Motoring! |

Ok...curiosity is killing me. Why did you take them out and what was the problem? |

Posts: 8144 New Bohemia, VA | Oh no, I didn't take them out. They hold the frame together, as the motor is a primary structure support as well. Being a make-believe wrencher I want to take something apart all the time and the rear engine mount bolts stand out as a temptation. |

Great article..>Thanks!!!
Also, Thanks guys for the replies!! I will print this info and put it to gogod use...
The question was asked if I was a long rider to get the break in period done....I have an '06 Road Glide and I am at 40,000 miles...500 miles is nothing unless it's raining ...Should knock that out in a week or two at the MOST!!!
Again, Thanks!!! |

Posts: 460 Centennial, CO | Ha ha! SWEET! I had my first 500 done the second day and had to wait until Tuesday when the shop was open to drop the bike off. They were a little freaked because I was the first Vision owner to have done that. I was back in two weeks later for my second and they had to ask what the hell I was doing. I explained that I RIDE my bike. I don't put in my living room as a show piece. LOL I have since put 9k on the bike since September of last year. This is a bit lite for me this year as normally I am at the 15k range by the end of a year. So, I figure I will be 3k short IF the rest of the year continues to go as poorly as this first part. |

Posts: 79 Austin, Texas | I had over 800 miles on the ride home from the dealer. Stopped at just past 500 miles and changed the oil in a Walmart parking lot with a dealer supplied oil change kit and an aluminum foil pan from Walmart. Looked strange but it worked. Then I poured the old oil into the empty oil bottles and carried it home to get rid of it. The foil pan stayed at Walmart. A bit obsessive/compulsive I guess, but I wanted to be sure I followed the break in recommendations. |
