Posts: 460 Centennial, CO | Here is the deal. I got sick and tired of my iPhone having issues while I was riding down the road. The biggest issue is actually with me in that I could never load the correct songs and make a trip worthwhile.
So...I bought a GXM30 on Ebay for 100 bucks and ran the cabling through my fairing and hooked it up. I called XM purchased the lifetime membership deal and got the machine up and running on my 2820. I rolled down the road and I am NOT looking back.
Now...for those that mentioned you needed a different cable and what not. I pulled out my old MP3 cable, removed the iPhone/iPod cable and put the MP3 back on. I left it out of the compartment and just ran the phone jack right up to the side of the 2820 and plugged it in. Tuned to AUX and DONE! XM with Nav Traffic and Nav Weather! SWEET!
MUCH better than I ever dreamed and no extra junk on my handlebars or something that I have to worry about flashing my stereo and starting over with trying to get it working properly. Just plugged it and and DONE! |

Where exactly does your GXM sit? Mine is under the rear panel (I've yet to try it with the trunk on). But it worked well riding 2 up. No reception loss unless I was directly driving SE (which only happened in parking lot and even then it was less than 2 seconds). I'm in Bay Area CA. |

I can afford a vision but would have a hard time justifying an XM purchase for the bike. First off I ride to 'get away' and do not require a constant stream or distracting blather to occupy my mind. The one thing that does appeal is the weather and news coverage like NPR for those mornings while traveling on the bike. Other than that I ride to wash my mind of the contant dribble of day to day communication with the real world. I would like a com system and will install a better antenns for the weather band but would never consider any of it if I had to sigh a contract to get the services. |

I can understand riding to get away but many people nowadays ride to get to work. I spend too much time on the bike to be disconnected. The traffic updates are great, as are the endless stations of sports and music.
I ride to get away too but because I spend so much time on the bike doing other than leisure a lot of these things I view as necessary. It is part of why I bought the Vision. Wind protection, hard bags, comfort, etc etc. the GXM is an extension of the bike's functionality. |

As an afterthought, I purchased a Garmin 2820 (ebay-used), GXM30 (ebay-new) & Victory's GPS Mount
Everything is hooked up & running except I haven't installed the GXM30 or subscribed to XM yet
Why did you plug in a phone jack into your 2820, I thought once XM antenna is hooked up & subscribe to XM, then you have everything?
Also where did you mount & how did you run (cable) your GXM30 for a clean look?
Thanks in Advance

Posts: 133 New Castle Delaware | I am thinking about adding xm subcription to my 2820. Question.... When you have the xm 30 hooked up and have subscribed on what screen does it show up on the 2820? I looked in my 2820 book to reseach this and there is a screen for traffic and for weather but I dont see one for xm radio. |

+1 - Fact is...I ride a TON when I get the opportunity. This year has had its ups and downs with rain so I didn't ride nearly as much as I would like to have ridden. But oh well.
WROMAN - I completely understand your points. I can't fault you for that and won't. This is a to each his/her own kind of thing. I thought the same thing you did for the longest time. Why spend the money...its not worth it!
Well, to be honest, I had a hard time justifying this expense until the last few months when on trips and out in the middle of nowhere I had NO signal for my iPhone and the music I had on there was just not correct for riding. I wanted to listen to something but nothing on my phone at that time. I played with different play lists and even dropped some cool books on tape (mp3) onto it and still didn't get what I wanted. Sometimes out in the boonies I found that I wanted to listen to something a bit more relaxing OR maybe some hair band stuff but had none of that on my phone.
So, I went with XM because they have a TON to offer. Yes, I can listen to talk, county, sports, rock...whatever. I love music because that does relax me and gets ME away from the rat race (to your point). But here is the best part...I know you know this already...I can shut it off at anytime if I feel the need! The make a really cool round button on the console just for that. Heh heh! Just kidding!
The weather part of it is not the best. But it does give me some good information and what I need/want for my trips. If I am really concerned about the weather and I have phone signal, I pull up the weather from accuweather and look at the moving radar to see what is in store.

That's because Garmin offers there own traffic & weather subscription service, separate and distinct from XM. You get a separate instruction guide with the GXM-30. Click on this link to download the user manual: http://www8.garmin.com/products/manual.jsp?product=010-00517-05 Vince.

I put a small piece of velcro on my dash and centered the receiver. I did this because that is about the highest point on the bike with exception to the trunk. I wanted to ensure I had good signal all the time and putting it somewhere near the back didn't seem prudent. I will post a pic or two at some point. Maybe today if I can get it done.
I looked at the windshield and actually removed it and planned to take the top dash off and run the cable. When I got to looking it I found that I could run the cable into the cowl throw the open area in which the motor runs the shield up and down. I just made sure it was out of the way so it didn't get pinched. I then ran the cable down into the lower compartment and tucked it into the cable runs that were already there. I didn't need to strap it down with tie wraps or anything. Tucked in, it should stay fine. Time will tell on that but after 1600 miles...no issues yet and I don't expect any.
Now to the point for Biker and Turbo...
I plugged in the module into the back of the unit. I could hear nothing and remembered that someone else told me I had to use the "headphone jack" to get the music portion. I am not sure why, but the only thing that comes out of the 2820 through the speakers if the stupid ladies voice telling me directions (You would figure after so much technology they could make it sound more human...guess not...and I am a tech guy to boot). Anyway, had the new iPhone cable in my console cubby and thought about it for a minute. Someone had suggested that I purchase yet ANOTHER adapter to get the iPhone cable to accept a headphone jack. Then I realized that I still had my old MP3 cable that came with the bike. So, I walked into my room, pulled it out of the drawer (I normally never thrown these types of things away) and walked back to the bike and removed the speedo cover and lifted up the console. Replaced the cable with the MP3 cable and left the cable out of the glove box (whatever we call the thing).
I put the cover back and plugged everything together and I am good to go. NOW...if I wanted (which I won't...back to Wroman's point about getting away) I can use my bluetooth phone and listen to people as I am riding down the highway (yeah...NOT going to happen unless its an emergency)!
It took me 10 minutes to run the cable, plug it into the GPS and call XM. Of course, the call took 20 minutes because I couldn't understand the poor kid on the other end that appeared to only speak arabic. But its all good...he was a nice kid and got me hooked up! |

Posts: 460 Centennial, CO | There are a few things here if you don't want to read the manual that I figured out.
In the main menu, click tools and select Music. This will bring up the MP3/XM option. Click on the source button until you get your XM out. The rest is pretty intuitive if you play with it for a few minutes. The nice thing here is that you have 3 (three) XM modes you can run. This is basically an FM1 FM2 type of thing. If you are on XM1 you can set presets to whatever channel you want. XM2 the same but they can be different than 1 and 3...etc.
If you click on the map while your music is playing OR you have it running at all, there is an icon in the lower right corner to get back to the player. Simple and quick.
The Nav and Weather are a bit different. From the menu, click tools and select either weather or navigation and you are there. From there you will need to play with the near here functions or near another city...etc.
Hope this helps! |

If you remember when most satellite ready radios were Sirius ready, that's about that time I signed up. Now they're all XM ready including my pickup, motorcycle and most of the satellite radio capable GPS units I found. Murphy's Law I guess. |

Hey Mike,
Yes, the music comes out of the speakers. The headphone jack allows the music out. The cable that sits in the back of the 2820 does not. Don't ask me why they did this...but how it goes I guess. They may have done this to allow a true pass through. Not sure!
You may find that certain channels have bass while others do not. I called XM to ask about this. Yes, its at the head end (their end). So, there is not much that can be done unless you add an equalizer. I turned up my bass all the way when listening to Country and found that its too high for Rock. Oh well!
Let me know how it goes!

Did it make any difference in reception (bad) mounting the XM receiver under the winshield motor vs on top of the dash? |

Not really, I have 6 stations preset to my favorites & even with gloves on its not a hassle, I love my 2820, I payed $76 for the year & it includes weather & traffic & warns me (if an accident occurs & in my path) the weather will show active forecast & pinpoint on the GPS the weater conditions-what more can u ask for

The install took me all of less than an hour to do. If you follow the instructions and have some minimal tools such as a drill/bit...etc., you can have this done on your own, save money and have it running this week if you have the parts.
Just thinking...its Christmas and you can save the money.
