I personally like the strip and solder method over actually cutting. The crimp connectors are nice but they do come loose after a while plus they are bulky. Once you tap into 4 or 5 wires you have a big clump.
Use a good wire strippers and just grab the insulation, strip it back but not cut. Then take the new wire and wrap into the exposed copper wire and solder it. Then simply wrap electric tape around it and your done.

I strip, tap and solder just like clubford was stating. The wiretaps are problematic and cause wire breakage.

I agree!!

The mechanical connection between the two wires is very important!

Walmart also sell liquid heat shrink! It kinda like a liquid electrical tape. It should hold up even better than tape.

Just my .02!

I do very similar, however, the one difference is that after I strip off part of the insulation, I use a small pick tool, or anything small and sharp, to open the bundle of wires in the center, then put my wire that I want tapped, into the center of the wire I am tapping, then twist the two together, then solder. It ensures a good physical connection, one that won't unwrap, and that even if the solder breaks, won't come undone unless you want to.

working on semi trucks all day i see a lot of the push together style and i will tell you never use them. soldering is the best way but if you dont like to do that or are not good at it at least use a heat-shrink butt connector.

If you have vinyl electrical tape - throw it out and go get a roll of self sealing electrical tape. It has a plastic pull off strip between layers and when you stretch and wrap it, it cures together and forms a permanent waterproof seal. I've used it on 220 VAC submersible well pump wiring. AND, it is forever, not 6 months like the vinyl type. A whole $3.00 for a 10' roll at Ace Hardware (or whatever in your area).
