Posts: 52 Spokane, WA | I seem to have a habit of touching the right exhaust heat shield with the sole of my boot. I don't know when or how it happens, (maybe dismounting?) but it leaves melted shoe goo on the heat shield.
The first time it happened, I tried a light solvent (like goo-gone) to soften the stuff, then chrome polish for the rest and the stain. The problem is, of course that chrome polish is quite abrasive and I'm worried about polishing right through it into the underlying nickel plating.
Any ideas? I thought perhaps a stronger solvent in the first step, but I don't know what that would be.
Thanks,

I did search around a bit before posting, but obviously didn't hold my head right. The Easy-Off oven cleaner perhaps sprayed onto a shop towel instead of direct (to avoid overspray) and a hot exhaust just might do it.
Thanks!

| I use the Spray & Wipe Instant Detailer from Pure Victory Gear along with some #0000 steel wool.
It's the stuff Larry the Polish guy sells at all the Victory Events and you can buy at your local dealer.

I ended up using Goof-Off and spray carb cleaner this time around, but it took a LONG time and many applications for the solvents to soak through the gunk to the point where I could wipe it off. Since I'm a car/bike/equipment/fixtures/whatever polishaholic, I'm going to pick up a tube of Flitz to try for this and other projects.

I got scratches in my pipes now, you can see them on an angle. I'll use a wet terry or the hot pipes and that seems to work good. Then I'll go over them with the Pure Victory when they are cold, minus the #0000 steel wool to get them to shine.

You're right. It is FLITZ. I keep it in the bike so I was going from my bad memory. The stuff works great. |
