Posts: 235 Kincardine, Ontario, Canada | Had the dealer put on a new set of E3's last winter while in storage, (they were bought directly from Polaris). Today, I had to put on another set after 10,000 miles.
There was plenty of tread left on the rear and double that amount on the front, but both tires were cupped, the rear more so. I constantly check pressure and always run 38 front 40 rear.
The past weekend while at a Victory meet in Bancroft, Ontario, the bike side stepped a couple of times while high speeding through the curves. At first I thought it was the road or perhaps me, but when the 2 up Vision in front of me was leaving me behind I started to think it was the bike. The rainy ride home was scary, and I'm not normally bothered by heavy rain as I do ride in it frequently.
Once home I saw how bad both tires had cupped, even the mechanic was surprised for the mileage and stated they had just put those tires on!!
Anyway, new tires, bike is handling as it was. I'm wondering if I just push this bike too hard, like I said there was plenty of centre tread left, but the bike had become too unstable.

Posts: 1290 Ruskin, Fl | I was adjusting my belt a few weeks ago and noticed my rear tire was cupped very bad. Tires buzzed when I lean over at moderate speed. This is my third rear tire and first time I have noticed this wear pattern. First two replacements were at about 8K due to flats. Current tire is pushing 14K plus and it is almost bald. Ordered a new E3 today. I want to try something differant, but was once again talked out of it. I also ride hard. My floor boards and rear tipovers have the scrapes to prove it. |

Last year my rear E3 cupped on a 2up trip from Wisconsin-Tennessee-Wisconsin. I was told that I didn't have enough rear air shock pressure when 2up and loaded. I now run around 60#'s in the rear air shock. I don't know why your front tire would be cupped other then maybe the front fork springs should be firmer.

Posts: 235 Kincardine, Ontario, Canada | All good points, I have a couple of floorboard scrapes from parking lot manovers, but when I take bends at 70~ 80 MPH, I avoid touching. LOL
Solo I run 35 psi in the shock and two up, close to 70 psi, perhaps I'm too much there forcing more front end load????
My cousin had the Bridgstones on his Wing, they cupped for him too
Anyway, if new tires every 10K is the price for a great ride, I'll accept it.
Besides someone has to keep the economy rolling.....LOL |

Posts: 1632 Jasper, MO | I had prior experience with the E3's and a Goldwing. We found that running the tires at 40 front and 42 rear lessened the cupping, and gave the longest life. It's still true on the Vision with E3's. Speeding through the curves only evens out the tire wear. Plus, it's fun running away from those smug Goldwing riders. The 'Wings handle just as good, but don't have as much cornering clearance as our Visions.

But wouldn't that lessen your contact patch? I think the cupping has more to do with the different compounds, hard in the centre, softer on the edges. I've heard the Wing riders run with more air. |

Posts: 1290 Ruskin, Fl | Can't wait to hear about it nohawg. I return from a long overdue visit with friends and family in NY/NJ on the 16th. New tire and helmet on the 17th. Gonna leave early Sat. AM and do the 628 mile trip there in one day. Despite over 30,000 miles in a little over two years, they are all an average of 100 mile trips. This will be my longest one day outing. While I'm getting the tire, also ordered a new EXO-100 helmet for the wife. She hats wearing a helmet, but once we leave Florida it's the law. I'm think it's going to be more comfy than the cheap brain bucket. |

| Going to Lobsterfest this year in Stecoah, NC. Will have to leave late to get there, so 1,200 one day.
Then three days of riding the Dragon. Will take two days to get home. |

Posts: 1290 Ruskin, Fl | That's impressive on a bike, or are you going to trailer? I have made the Florida-New York drive several times in a day. It's about 1200 miles and takes me about 19 hours. That's in a cage. Can't imagine that in one day on a bike. |

Doesn't seem to in practice. Some of us Vision riders run with more air too. Learned to do that from my own experience, and the experience of myriads of GL1800 riders. More air = less cupping = longer tire life. Yes, it's counter-intuitive, but the E3's like it.

Posts: 8144 New Bohemia, VA | I think the perfect match for me is 40-42 psi in both front and rear. I'll stand by the E3s as they are good using both bias on my old goldwing and the radials on the Vision. Both had a similiar "cupping" pattern which seems to be more a scallop and both gave me good life, the Vision going up beyond 12,000 miles. I consider this cupping to be normal wear and have never been concerned with it. I think it is the way the tire is made and the compounds used more than it is a problem. I think some suspension adjustment also has some bearing as to how pronounced the tire will scallop. |
