Well, just like everything else, if you don't look there's not a problem, right? Well, the rear head pipe gasket was pffting on me so I thought I'd change it out. Of course the mufflers have to be pulled so I was taking them off and they come off in pieces. I'll post some pictures later but the left is the worse.

I had to do it, I fired it up with the mufflers off and it sounds great, but not as loud as I thought it would be. Just had to do it. I hope to have everything back together before the weekend is over.

Why are the exhaust gaskets so crappie? What do they look like? I know my header pipe right by the heads are all rust.
Whats with that??

I'm a self-admitting abuser, with 82,000 miles on the bike and a year 'round rider, the bike has been exposed to road chemicals for deicing. I do spray down the bike after some wet episodes in the winter, and I do check out the rest of the bike for problems. Overall the bike is still in great shape, however with STEEL mufflers they are very prone to rust. Like a friend pointed out to me, a car muffler will last a long time despite the exposure because they are galvanized. Motorcycle mufflers are steel, go figure.

So with the mileage and exposure, I think they have done well.

As far as the gaskets, Victory gaskets are not as pliable and are prone to leaking. Lloydz sells a softer gasket that will work much better, so I'll be call Ms. Bri tomorrow and order me a set. In the mean-time, I'll use a copper high-temp gasket sealer to re-use the old ones until the new ones come in.

The wife unit wants to ride, so I got my work cut out tomorrow, bar any unseen circumstances that will keep me from putting them back together.

If you can't weld up the mufflers, there is a set for sale on ebay.

thanks VT, I got a set I'm picking up tomorrow. I actually got friends...

Weld? I thought about that a few times, but the left one is shot up front and wouldn't be worth the effort. I'll probably put a good coat of rustoleum high-temp paint on it just for kicks and giggles and see if I can squeeze out another 80,000. Hmmm, 160,000 on a Vision, ahhh, life is good!

thanks wroman, I'm going to pick some up now.

I don't know if I should be disappointed or pleased. Knowing my mufflers were shot and I could get a set of stock, I figured it was time to replace my head gaskets again because I thought that was were my popping and backfire was coming from. But, there were zero leaks from my header pipes from where I replaced them about 38,000 miles ago, zero I say. These were the so-called bad gaskets from Victory, but they have held up very well. I do have some some rust action going on around the pipe behind the collar that I don't like, but they should be good for a few more thousand miles.

in case anyone is following this, I'm finished with replacing the mufflers. Once again, no more popping and the bike is running quieter now. I replaced the oil filter, but never lost enough oil to warrant to top it off. I'll keep tabs on it over the next few days and see where it is setting.

It seems reusing the old exhaust gaskets and putting a thin bead of the copper high heat rtv is working well. I let it cure for 24 hours and it seems to be doing the job. I'll probably pull them again in a few months and replace the studs, I'm a little learing of them, and use the Lloydz gaskets. Not bad for a few hours over 4 day job.
