I assume there is a switch for turning on the HID light, amoung all the other switches. I've seen a video that seems to show both normal headlights have both a low beam & a high beam.

My question is - if you have the HID light on at night with the bike in high beam, does it shut off when you go to low beam (so you don't blind an on-coming car), or do you manually have to turn it off also?

Thanks,
Reg

Reg,

The HID light does operate on a separate switch.  The head light's high/low beam does not affect the HID at all.  When I have been riding with HID on, I am able to ride and only use the high/low beam selector: with out affecting the drivers of oncoming cars.

Thanks for the reply Brandon. Is the HID a narrow beam that shoots out beyond the range of the high beams? I tend to ride a lot at night and it's imperative that I have good lights. Almost collided with black bear in Jasper National Park. Crossed the road in front of me & I didn't see him until the last possible moment. Fortunately for the bear & me, the bike stopped in time. Was hoping that I wouldn't have to spend more money on aftermarket lights for the Vision.

The H.I.D. is a somewhat flat, broad beam side-to-side. It is WAY bright, and makes the bike easier to see, and makes the road easer to see as well, but it is not a pencil beam. The headlights are quite adequate at long range illumination, especially on high beam. This bike is SO much easier to be seen than most other bikes, due very much in part to the H.I.D. The same lights can be found on many high end cars from the factory. Very white beam! I am thinking of converting my other headlights to H.I.D. as well.-----Metalguy

That has to be expensive!

The HID is technically a low beam that supplements the halogen low beams and it does stay on when you turn on your high beams.

Driving down a dark road on a moonless night, you can never have enough light (especially when the area is full of deer).

Thanks for your replies.

One more thing concerning lights, when installing fork mounted driving lights they come on with the H.I.D but shut off automatically when high beams are on. The H.I.D stays lit on high.

I'm sorry to burst your bubble BUT it depends on how your Vision is wired. My fog lights come on w/ my HID and they all go off when I hit high beams.

It's interesting reading these posts. I have not yet received my Vision , as I am currently on vacation in Puerto Rico, but I have purchased and received the factory service manual which I have read completely through and it states that the HID headlight shuts off when the regular headlight is switched from low beam to high beam. It seems from the replies here that the service manual is wrong in this instance, or perhaps not? I do know that the PIAA fork mounted driving shut off when the headlight is switched to high beam though, as pictures of this are posted in the gallery here.

The HID is totally controlled by the switch on the dash. Stays on regardless of the headlight Hi/Low setting.

CoolHandLuke, when you added the fork mounted running lights did it override the original switchology or did you have it custom wired to turn off the HID and fork lights when the Hi beams come on?

Hi songfan
hard to get the running lights wrong, you simply plug new light harness into existing plug near the fuse box also install an additional relay
in fuse box. The fork lights only go out when high beams are on. However i did notice a vision at the dealer the other day that had fork lights installed, when he put high beams on the H.I.D and the fork lights went out. Im glad my h.i.d stays lit, not sure why some stay on and some go off with the high beam. we should take a poll

Mine work the same way...and are controlled via the driving light switch on the console.

Well, it's obvious that different bikes are wired differently. Which way is "right"?

It seems to me like the PIAA lights are meant to be like fog lights on a car and are set to shut off when the high beams are on. When you don't have the PIAA lights installed, the HID running stays on regardless of the headlight Hi/Low. I think the correct wiring is for the PIAA lights to go out but the HID should stay on when you go to Hi beams. The HID should always go with the switch, whether it's on or off.

If the PIAA lights are tied into the HID switch, what's the 4th switch plate on the dash for? I thought it would be for the PIAA lights.

Not that I'm confused or anything.

The PIAA lights on my bike are not tied into any console switch, this is as per the Victory PIAA light installation instruction.
Victory does not offer an AUX switch for the blank (4th) switch pod. I bought a HID switch and installed in the blank and connect my accent LED lights.
Maybe someday they will offer something for the blank.

Vision tex,

So your PIAA lights come on with your low beams, and have nothing to do with the HID?

Tom, I don't know exactly how my wrench wired them. The fog lights come on w/ the HID (when swithed on) & all go off when high beams are on.

Has anyone replaced there normal lights with PIAA (H4)?

Dealer said I will have to undress the front end?

Manual seams to differ.

My HID light is burned out already. Picked the bike up last November. Anyone else having problems with the HID light going out early? Anyone know average life span? I also have a light out on the touring trunk.

I have the Tour Comfort, so my driving light is NOT HID, but it is already inoperative. Checked the fuses last night, and none are burnt out. Either the bulb is shot, or there is an issue in the electrical somewhere. Will be returning to the dealer before too long to get the last of my issues resolved. This one will be added to the list. Brought my bike home 3/29/08, and have 11300 on it already. Noticed the driving light was out in the 9000+ mile range while on my trip recently.

You might want to check the connection to the dash switch.  My friend's HID "went out" and it just turned out to be a loose connection to the dash rocker switch.  Give it a try, that may be it.

Check the connection to the dash rocker switch.  My friends came loose and his "went out".  After reseating the wires, it works again.
