Posts: 58 Northwest Ohio | I am replacing the wheels on my vision and need both tires. I have been researching on several forums about diferent brands as well as the darkside. First off I should say my bike has a hitch and is more my touring bike and two up bike. I have a jackpot for my cruiser-solo bike.
The more research I do the more confused I am. I am very interested in the darkside set-up as the roads here in Ohio are very flat and the cost and wear of the CT is very tempting. I have watched videos and read many discusions on pros and cons of the darkside.
If I were to go this route the rear most popular CT is the potensa 185/55/16 since I have a hitch. What would be a good front for this set-up?
If going all motorcycle tires I have read about the metzlers and dunlap brands. Again there are pros and cons on both.
I would be interested in hearing anything everyone has to say IF THEY HAVE EXPERIENCED WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT. I have read alot of folks bashing this or that but have never run them.

Posts: 1359 New Bohemia, Va | Personally, I've been more than satisfied with the stock E3 with an average of 12,000 miles on the rear, and around 20,000 on the front. I'm currently on number 4 for the front and number 7 on the rear, no issues. |

| If it helps, I tried a set of Bridgestone G704/G709 as used on Goldwings. I didn't like them at all compared to the Dunlop E3s. They have a more pointed profile and felt a bit too unstable to me. It wanted to drop into corners and just overall felt too loose. Problem with the E3s is that they feather really bad for me. I've got 4500 miles on the '11 rear now and its already feathering and roaring in corners which is what happened on my '10 motivating me to try the Bridgestones.

Posts: 58 Northwest Ohio | Just spent some time on the GL1800 site reading about the CTs. Very good reading! I have always thought outside of the box. Just because it didn't come that way doesn't mean that it is wrong, just not the norm. The latest on these bikes are car mufflers instead of a $700 motorcycle exhaust. If you would contact thrush they would say no as well as victory. But guys are running them and are very happy with the sound. I haven't seen dyno #s yet but more and more people are doing this. Just saying. |

I'm happy with the Dunlop E3s, even with the fast wear on them.
But if you spend a lot of time on flat, straight roads and interstates a different tire might make sense for you.

Posts: 258 Akron, Ohio | I too live in northern Ohio so I know the roads you speek of. I have went Darkside for that very reason. I have the 195/55/16 on but I do not have a hitch. With a hitch it is my understanding that a 185/55/16 is better. Gives a little more clearance. I had the stock E-3s before the change. I am keeping the CT as the difference in handling is minimal. If you would like to see one mounted you are more than welcome to stop by. I can also recommend a tire shop that will mount and balance for $20.

I will look but I just typed in the size I wanted and looked through the adds. As far as front I am going with a Bridgestone BT 045 rear. The Mileage is supposed to be better than most others, and they are said to handle well. |

Be careful running a "run flat" tire. I have read where folks don't know they are flat and get in trouble. From the reading I have done, it is not recomended to use these unless you have a tire pressure monitoring system.
The seller I bought from had no listings now. These are also supposed to be a good choice but not with a hitch.

| I will not start an argument here, there have been plenty of arguments over the years on many different forums, but I will say this, having ridden for a more than just a quick try a motorcycle equipped with a CT on the rear, the actual handling ONCE LEANED OVER is not different from a MT equipped motorcycle but the EFFORT to get the bike leaned over is significantly more than that needed to lean the bike over with a MT. |

Posts: 2027 Brighton, TN | +1 on Travelin Man's response, in addition I know from personal experience that the E3 is a "run flat" as do others, the sidewall is stiff enough to support without damaging the rim. It gets a little squirrely from no pressure, but that lets you know something is amiss. I only use "run flat" as a descriptor not actually saying it is a true "GoodYear Run Flat". Thank you and I speak of no oil, or kilometers. |

Never fails.This size is not very common. I checked locally also with a shop my brother manages and he can't get one either. E-bay has nothing to offer as well. I'll keep shopping. |

Posts: 60 not far from hustler wisconsin | the e-3's that came on my 09 vision were the best wearing tires i have ever had on any bike. i live in twisty hill country and like to scrubb the rubber and shiny parts too sometimes. 10,900 miles they are shot but still that is great wear for me.
that being said, i am putting a hitch on and have been studying the darkside info here and other places. i am going to darkside this spring and will photo and report for all interested. talked to a trusted tire man and he said he has always felt car tires were better made than bike tires from a durability standpoint, and he has done a lot of darksiding for goldwingers over the years |

You must live on the northwestern side of Ohio.
Come down to the Southeastern side of Ohio and ride any 3 digit county road and I'm sure you will change your mind.
Some of my favorites are route 26 for sweepers, and 255 & 536 for some sphincter tightening twisties and switchbacks.
These last two roads are anything but flat.
