Posts: 199 Salt Lake City | I want to do this to mine, but was wondering something; I understand that they are typically painted, but has anyone had a window tint shop add a tint film instead of having them painted? Also, I'm 6-9 and sit fairly tall in the saddle and was thinking of adding a light tint to my windshield; is this illegal? |

Spraytint works but is very hard to get even. I tried, and it looked fine from the front, but like crap looking through the back. I ended up painting it opaque (it was a very short windshield).
Legality can be argued because it's really a windscreen, not a windshield. No regulations. As long as it doesn't impede your view. |

Posts: 785 Mt. Vernon, WASH. | My Yamaha VENTURE ROYALE came with a brown tinted windscreen that looked really cool and was IMPOSSIBLE to see throughafter dark, especially on side or back roads after the sun went down try standing on the boards for an hour looking over the windshield to get home, that sucker got swapped out for an aftermarket clear one! Visit your local work supply and safety store, there's an outfit that makes really inexpensive (like $ 3.00 a pair) wrap around saftey glasses (I see them used by the shop workers on shows like American Chopper) that have a slight golden tint, I've ridden those long after the suns gone down and can still see perfectly well and they really do kill glare, if they get scratched?------out they go, next pair please. And if you're goining to progressives in your prescription like I have, get them PHOTO SENSITIVE but in brown, not gray or green.
I also won't wear a tinted visor for the same reason as the windshield, if it rains hard, you're blind with that smoke or dark blue visor down, when I rode with a full face SHOEI I put some vinyl tape across the bottom of the clear visor that worked with the visor up like the bill on a cap for sun shading by tilting the visor a bit and didn't interfere when I needed the visor completely down for rain. |

Posts: 156 dinwiddie, va | I had my windshield and upper deflectors covered on the backside with black vinyl. It gives the show side a painted look for a fraction of the cost. I get them done for customers, Upper and lower deflectors are about $80 to do. Any sign shop should be able to do it. I have the shorty windshield, so I look over it. But when doing long trips I have another clear windshield to ride with

Posts: 156 dinwiddie, va | How much is it for a tinted windshield or lowers, or to have them painted. When I did mine, I couldn't even find a tinted windshield, nor someone that would tint it. Every tinter that I talked to, said that it wouldn't come out right because of the bends of the w/s. They wouldn't even consider doing it, even telling them I wouldn't hold them liable and I was experimenting for others... Seemed like they didn't even want to try. But it sonds like he was really interested in the lowers. As far as I know without looking the painted cycleops lowers were pretty expensive compared to just vinyling them. That was what I was getting at. Not really about the windshield. I never did my windshield until I had a clear at my disposal and I didn't even have to put any money out for.

The reason I asked about having a tint shop do mine was that my painter quoted me a $150 price just to paint the lowers(4 pieces); I have seen them painted, and they look like they have been tinted, which is what I want. They look sweet, but I know the price of window tinting would be much less if the film would work/last....

Posts: 323 N. Miami, Florida | VisionNWRider - 2011-02-06 9:26 PM FYI; CycleopsUSA.com has darker and custom color lowers and cee baileys has tinted wind screens ready to go. Thanks for the mention but I had to correct the website URL as what you typed will go to an excercise bike site. My site is actually www.CycleOpsUSA.com and the direct link to ourchroed and powder coated billet aluminum uppers and lowers is: http://www.cycleopsusa.com/custombillet.html#wd The problem with investing money into the OEM plastic ones is that when they break at the lower mounting hole, like they all do sooner or later, you've now wasted the extra cash. Our billet lowers come in many, many powder coat colors to either match or contrast your OEM paint, and being billet aluminum they will NEVER break. For those unfamiliar with them they start at only $149 list, or only $130 to you Vision-Riders members here. Contact me for the V-R discount code to save the 10% on all parts that I offer. |

Posts: 199 Salt Lake City | Makes more sense to buy the billet lowers; the last thing I want/need is to have one of the plastic ones crack when I'm in the middle of a trip and need them - exactly what happened to a buddy of mine. Gotta start saving for a winged trunk rack and the lowers..................
Do the painted lowers color look the same as my midnight cherry paint in the bike? |

Posts: 323 N. Miami, Florida | My billet sets are actually metallic powder coated, not painted, so it looks a little bit darker at some angles. Powder coat and paint with clear over it have different refractive properties so a perfect match isn't always possible, but a relatively close one is. We also offer them sanded out to 400 grit and prepped for paint (same price as gloss black) where you can have a local painter match it perfectly, or even use the Vic rattle can laquer and clear coat to make a perfect match. |

I'm making an educated guess here, but I would think that most of your customers opt for the powder coated lowers in their color choice. If you recommend those, that is what I will be ordering soon; don't know if I need/want to drop another $100 or so to get that "exact" match from my painter. Thoughts....?

In probably 150 sets sold in Metallic Midnight Cherry there have been only two customers not completely satisfied with the match. Here's a pic of a powdered upper against the paint on a Vision.

Posts: 323 N. Miami, Florida | nightvision - 2011-02-09 4:36 PM Wow! I have never seen a powder coat match up so well. Nice! That's the best angle match, and like I said previously, different light angles on the bikes paint morphs the bike's tint some and then the deflectors appear darker as powder doesn't 'light up' like paint will with its multiple layers of light gathering clear will. That said, it ain't half bad. |

Posts: 166 Bullhead City, AZ | Got mymidnight cherry lowers on and cycleops is right they appear darker at different angles. My bike is also in the sun alot and even though the paint shines it is still a little faded making the color off a little That said I am very happy with them. |
