Posts: 2118 Pitt Meadows, BC Canada | Wow - I'm in shock.... I ride snowy mtn roads all the time.
I do know - our highways dept. would have their ass sued off for this. Their job is to ensure that if water was diverted onto the highway - they need to do WHATEVER it takes to protect the people using that road. ALL roads like this are constantly patrolled - how can that happen on a public road???
Stuns me thinking about all the years I have been riding like that - my trust was in the Dept. of Hwys doing their job. Makes me scared of my future riding....

| Wow if we could sue some more people in the states, that would be awesome. With our 14 trillion dollar with a "T" debt.
Answer one question DON, If we sued the Hiway department and took all of their funding who would clean the roads at all? |

Posts: 235 Kincardine, Ontario, Canada | I think its up to us as individuals to use some common sense, and not be so quick to blame others for our misfortunes. Perhaps this fellow is new to cold weather riding and not aware of the possibility of ice in shaded areas. For me, being accustomed to winter driving, it's a given. |

I wonder how, he was wearing loafers for shoes and what appears to be dress slacks, with fingerless gloves.
Luck was on his side |

Posts: 2118 Pitt Meadows, BC Canada | Sorry - I live in an area where this can happen anytime, so our highways people do patrols, and bring out sand & salt when this happens. When they plow, they make allowances for runoff that doesn't run across the road. Yes, we pay - for safety. We would rather catch this stuff before it catches a 60 foot semi filled with propane or fuel, and kills a bunch of people. Somebody missed the boat on that one in the movie - you can see the water on the left side of the road before he gets to the frozen patch - it had been there for a long time and no one acted on it. Couple of shovels of sand. Shit - I would sue. But I also agree our 'Hero' was outdriving his visability and didn't react to the warning signals - water on the side - and shade, plus no view of the road ahead.
And I have been living the Disney life for a long time and plan a whole lot more. I will post my Hero Cam movies when the rain lets up, so you can see my Disney ride! |

| You can't sue any state for lack of road clean up period
Fingerless gloves himmm loafers himmm dunlop tire's not good. Tip over protectors not good at sixty.
In the spring I'm always scared when I ride thew the shad areas thinking there just might be some un melted ice.
It was sure a pretty looking country side and that helmet cam wow what a good clarity. It looked like he might have been able to ride it home.
I have come home in the fall when the roads are just starting to get ice and be leave me I'm white knuckled all the way. We all have ridden when maybe we shouldn't have so glade he looked ok and just a few bumps and bruises. |

Posts: 1359 New Bohemia, Va | is it fair to say that when someone post a video like this we can all learn from it? I'm glad his okay, and hopefully he's learned a lot from his misjudgment of a lot things. Tempature alone says there is potential for this kind of thing. Not recognizing the hazard when actually seeing is a very hard lesson to learn. But I'm sure we've all learned from this mishap. |

Posts: 3204 Memphis | Mt. Lemmon overlooks Tucson so they are not exactly geared to deal with ice of any kind. It rarely has that much snow on it. I saw the video a couple of weeks ago and thought about posting it but couldn't pull the trigger. Midnight Cherry, too close to home. |

Video is about twice the length of the one he posted going up the mountain. I'm sure that it felt 10 times as long. |

Posts: 262 Flowery Branch Ga | Team5150 If that's you in the video Good job! It could have been so much worse. Also thank you for showing just how tough these bikes really are. That accident really slamed it down on the right side. If one were to replicate that accident with most any other touring bike I don't think many would have fared as well. I hope all has came out well for you and the bike.

shhheeesh, I'm not sure I got the whole story, but I did read where some braino said this is the reason his next bike will have ABS. I'm starting to get scared of the ignorance of some of these folks that ride nowadays. |

Posts: 2118 Pitt Meadows, BC Canada | Amen, Cap'n. You and I both know that touching ANY kind of brakes in that situation would result in exactly what we saw.
BTW - when I mentioned 'sue the bastards' - what I really meant was making sure the insurance company knows that fault should be shared with the bastards that didn't take care of the ice on the road - like MOST of the fault. I understand that our guy didn't have to be there - and shares some of the fault because he was. But that was HORRIBLE maintainance of the road by those responsible.

Posts: 104 Corona, CA | ABS wouldn't have saved you on this. He had ABS on this bike. It was a brand new 2011.
He was in a curve that sloped the opposite way from the curve and it was black ice.

But it looked like he hit it on a angle and the back of the bike came out form him. I'm glad he looks ok. Ride safe |

Posts: 1290 Ruskin, Fl | Not wanting to play Monday morning quarterback, but it sound like he was under power and the bike stepped out on him. I know from 2 wrecks it's over before you know what happened sometimes. Just wondering if he had pulled the clutch and coasted through if the centrifugal force of the wheel's rotation would have kept him upright. Just glad he wasn't hurt too bad. |

| I always hate to see anyone falloff their bike, BUT!!!! First I'm willing to bet this is one of those midlife fellows who bought a little cruiser and then just had to have a bigger one even though it's more bike than he could handle. Second he should have seen that ice coming and stopped short or simply rode on instead of reacting and braking. Third if you read his account he doesn't even know what happened so he had no business riding after the get off, he had his bell rung.
Someone said "they are glad he wasn't hurt worse; Nice staement but perhaps had he been he'd have thought twice about riding with his bell rung, or riding at all.
Sorry if this seems harsh, but dang it folks this is the second Vision rider I've read or met with in a week who has really totalled their bike, mostly by riding with their head up their butt. The other fellow in question is in much worse shape and damn lucky to be alive. I knew it was too much bike for him first time we met. Folks need to know their limits and ride within their skill set. Just sayin |

Posts: 457 Green Bay, WI United States | That road has killed and injured more than it's fair share of my friends and family. My little bother (Mike) crashed and was thrown off the side of the mountian and his head hit a huge rock, thank god he was wearing a helmet. A HS friend (Billy) was killed up there and my cousin's husband crashed a fuel tanker off the side of the mountian back in the sixties (Jack). I respect the right and choice to be riding this time of the season and do not believe that any braking or other operator error was involved in this crash, let alone the hiway department not taking good care of the road, looked clean and green to me. We all know the risk of doing the cycle thing and this could have happened to any of us in the same condition. I ride because I can and do not look for a soft spot in the people that try there best to take care of the roads, man up and realize that we have a choice to ride or put or ride in a damn china cabinet to "look at" and tell the grandchildren what a bad a** biker we were. Sorry but Mt. Lemmon has too many great memories for me to allow it and the hiway worker to be abused in any way. Just sayin......
Ride hard, ride fast, but above all, ride safe..... |
