Posts: 104 Corona, CA | MOTORCYCLE-ONLY CHECKPOINTS IN GEORGIA DURING BIKE WEEK
The state of Georgia has received $70,000 in federal grant money to launch motorcycle-only checkpoints in early March, just as Daytona Bike Week is getting underway. For most travelers, their route will take them through Georgia and likely into awaiting roadblocks to check for such things as proper license and current registration, insurance, DOT-approved helmets, EPA-approved mufflers, working horn and lights, etc, etc.
?We were informed by unnamed sources that the Check Points would start in early March to coincide with the Daytona Bike Week event,? said Dan Forrest, State Director of ABATE of Georgia. ?Most points of entry into Florida will be involved, so anyone traveling through Georgia to Daytona might want to rethink their route.?
Motorcycle rights organizations across the country have issued a Call To Action regarding the proliferation of these motorcycle-only roadblocks being funded by NHTSA grants, and are urging the motorcycle community to voice their opposition to these so-called ?Safety Checks? by contacting NHTSA, the U.S. DOT and most importantly by asking your own federal legislators to support H.R. 1498 by Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI) to retain a ban on NHTSA's ability to lobby State Legislators using our federal dollars through the "Motorcycle Law Enforcement Demonstration" grant program (DTNH22-10-R-00386).
"These roadblocks or checkpoints for motorcycles ONLY are being conducted illegally and are discriminatory to say the least. This is one more piece of evidence of the constant profiling attempts targeting the motorcycling community at large. Their is no legal or constitutionally supported reason to stop, search or detain someone who is participating in a legal activity. Last I heard, riding a motorcycle is still a legal activity in the United States." |

He carries a metal roughly business card sized copy of the Bill of Rights with him so it trips the metal detectors and he can hand it to the TSA nazis @ the airport with the line 'here, take my Constitutional Rights while you're at it' and see what the reactions would be amongst the fine constabulary of the sovereign state of Georgia. |

Posts: 262 Flowery Branch Ga | This isn't going to happen. It is illegal. If you use some type of video recording device while riding make sure it is on should you find an mc only chekpoint and record everything. Then feel free to call the loal ACLU office. Checkpoints are so contested that they are rarely used for DUI's. This is all a bunch of scare tactic crap put out by the gov. to try to keep the sheeple in line. Also, what they are targeting are all the 3 patch clubs. They powers at large are worried that all the "biker gangs" will converge as one and rape and pillage all of FL.(SARCASM) Iknow it's misspelled. Don't worry so much about it. I don't use a DOT helmet (no lectures please, I'm an adult) and have yet to be hasseled about it, as an example.

Posts: 262 Flowery Branch Ga | Word from a reliable source said that IF THEY DO any type of roadblock it will be most likely targeting 3 patch clubs. That goes for the smaller clubs as well. Of course all of the large clubs will be targets, roadblocks or not. That is expected by most members, that's the way I understand it. I'm all over the SE for work every day and the only roadblock I have ever gone thru was near the house. They only wanted to see if I had a license. I'm guessing they were looking for illegals as we have a large Hispanic population in NE Ga.

Posts: 97 Okeefenokee Swamp | If you are not breaking the law and have nothing to hide, who cares if they set up check points. It happens here in Georgia all the time. They stop everything moving and ask to see a valid drivers license, proof of insurance and vehicle registration.Yes it is a pain, but be polite, show them what they ask to see and you will soon be on your way. As far as this being a violation of anyones constitutional rights, that is a matter for greater legal minds than mine to contemplate.I can almost with certainty say it will not only be bikes being stopped. I rode my Vision through a check point earlier today and the only people I saw getting upset were the ones the State Patrol had asked to the side of the road for failure to comply with State law.None of the ones pulled over were on bikes. They were in cars and pick up trucks.
By the way, I was wearing a non DOT helmet and the Trooper never said a word. I was also wearing a 3 piece Club Patch.maybe it helps that I am a member of a Police/Firefighter Club. |

Posts: 1158 Richmond, Virginia | Reminder to all of you guys who feel that carrying a hand gun is part of your motorcycle get up. You better have it stored properly and your concealed permit handy, otherwise you're only gonna make your trip worse by being a big mouth smart ass (as we know S O M E bike owners can be).
As for the negative comments on the TSA inspections. I fly for work monthly, seriously if someone patting you down, or making you take your shoes off
or sending you through a metal detector TO FIND A HIDDEN EXPLOSIVE on your own darn flight, makes you feel like your rights have been violated,
then you are probably the same person who would sue the airline if you lost a loved one because someone on board their flight detonated a bomb...
SERIOUSLY consider the alternatives to safety and less about your personal 2 minutes of inconvenience. |
