I realize that the tire subject has been written over and over, but I'm going to add some more chatter.
My 08's rear tires are in need of changing at 12,600 mi. I like the Avon Cobra tire and am currently shopping online for the best price.
Should having 2 different brand tires on front/rear be a concern ?
It will be several thousand miles before I need a new front.
Aside from the deeper tread depth on the new tire, will this cause the bike to handle differently ?

if you're a good rider I wouldn't worry, and folks will say there is no difference, I just wouldn't do it. Just my ounce of copper...

I would not mix tread patterns on a motorcycle.

I did exactly what you areasking about. I installed an Avon Cobra in place of my rear E3 and left my front E3 on until I wore it out. I experienced no funny handling or problems of any kind. Once you get Cobras on both ends you will be amazed at the difference they make. Go for it!
