| I need heat shields for the heat shields on the right to keep from melting my pants.
Anyone have a solution; I've got the lower deflectors which make riding comfortable but don't protect the pant legs from contact of course. |

I had a problem at my thigh, getting to close to the engine itself. I went to a local leather worker and had him make these up for me. Problem solved!

Gettysburg, 2008 Tour Premium | The lower wind deflectors will direct enough air to solve the heat enough for me. Keeps you warm when temps are low also. Of course you need to be moving for them to work. That brings up the question I would have with the solution that Nozzledog has, what happens in high heat and stop and go traffic? Having a tent around the rear cylinder has got to increase temps to the engine even while holding heat at bay for the rider. Someone with one of those infrared temp detectors should be able to find out, or even an oil temp gauge. |

North Orange County CA | If that is not just a rhetorical statement and you are actually melting your pants, my suggestion is to quit buying polyester pants.
You cant make the surface temperature of the engine and exhaust cooler, but you can raise the heat tolerance of the fabrics you choose.
If your pants are a supplied uniform and you don't have a choice then perhaps something like leather legs are in order.

Orlando, FL | Tarpits, nice solution~! I live in FL so the heat is always there. I do not have an issue with the right side of the bike being hot, but rather the left side. Heat coming off the oil cooler goes straight to my left ankle. If I am wearing my boots and thick socks it's not an issue. But if I hop on the bike to run a quick errand in my tennis shoes with shortie socks....... OUCH! SO I just don't do that anymore. I make sure I have my boots on even for a short run. I know HMD claims to have a solution that re-directs this hot air but he is apparently waiting for a patent? Geez, that can take 10 years. SO I ain't holding my breath!
By the way Nozzle, nice solution to your problem. I love the creativity of the people on this board!!

| I should have mentioned the issue is contact with the heat shield on the crossover pipe above ankle height. I thought the residue there was from the original owner, but I notice my new Aerostich goretex riding pants have a glazed spot there so it's happening to me as well.
I appreciate all the suggestions.
I was hoping perhaps someone had found another add on metal shield that might fit onto the existing to further isolate things. I understand from other reading here that header wrap below the shield might not be the way to go due to problems caused by water. |

Orlando, FL | Perhaps it's because I am always stretched out, but that area (which is pretty far back in the floorboards) is never a heat issue for me. I'm 5'9" and a 30 inch inseam. |

Although I misinterpreted the type of gear that you were melting, my answer is still the same.
1) Quit wearing synthetics. I wont claim that my mid 70s vintage waxed cotton gear is nearly as comfortable or offers the same level of protection that gortex does, particularly if you are wearing armor, but my waterproof trousers have yet to ignite.
or perhaps a more appropriate solution since Gortex is such cool stuff.
2) Figure out a way to protect the pants. A suede patch sewn on the inside of the legs, the leather legs that were in my first post, or some other solution that appeals to you more.
You could pick up a set of military surplus or equestrian gaiters on ebay pretty cheap. There are dozens of types.

Orlando, FL | I had a bike that always burnt my Frogg Toggs. Solution? Take some ironing board cover, cut to fir the area, and use iron on stuff to adhere it to your pants! Worked like a charm and was only a couple of bucks. |

| Hey Max---remember the seat on your 8-ball is 2" plus, lower than the stock Vision...I am 5'9" with a 29" inseam and usually don't have the heat issue with right side, but I am learning to be more careful at stops and where I put my feet down...... |

Orlando, FL | Well, the seat on the 8 ball is one inch lower to be exact. And the shock in the rear is an inch lower. But that's a good point. Yea, that puts my feet in a different place than most. Hmmmmmmm. Well, I have not yet had a problem yet with my 8. But it's only be a couple of months. Still, my Frogg Togg Solution still stands. Of course I may have to move/add ironing board cover to my rain pants as it was originally done for my Kawasaki and the pipes are different on that bike. Now I gotta think! LOL |

| Just completed a longish holiday ride; ended up melting the bottom edge of my mesh riding pants as wwell as portions of my rainpants sticking to the pipe, with resulting holes. I will try the ironing board cover or leather on my clothing in the future. Thanks for the comments. |
