Posts: 49 Lillian, Alabama | I've been using a garmin Nuvi for several years now and it gets the job done just fine. They only thing is that I make sure a have a couple of ziplock bags handy..that way, if it looks like rain I can pull the bag over the nuvi...zip is closed as much as possible at the bottom and just keep going. It works for me. |

Posts: 3773 Pittsburgh, PA | Same. As above, but I would Like to add that the car gps units aren't as bright in direct sunlight. I switched to the car gps units because I have paid for 4 motorcycle units since 2003 and they all failed at some point and I refuse to pay that high price anymore.... |

Posts: 231 Desert Hot Springs (Palm Springs area), CA | <p>I have used a Garmin 205w on my Yamaha TW200 and have had ZERO issues for 3 years of off road fun! So, when I got my Vision, I put a Garmin 765t and LOVE it. I use the Garmins MP3 player plugged into the AUX input. BTW, the 765t uses a cradle to connect that sits between the gps unit and the mount. This way I can easily remove and place the Garmin in my saddle bag without having to undo a bunch of connectors.? Posts: 102 Parkersburg WV | Thanks alot guys !!!!!!! I found a good deal on e-bay on a nuvi 260w refurb for $83 incl shipping. I too hate to pay the high price for a motorcycle based gps. I currently use the garmin quest but the screen is getting small in my old age lol

Thanks

I just use the suction cup mount, never had a problem. Mine works fine with gloves. I just plug it in to the socket in the little glove box. |

I just realized that I responded to this post in a totally innappropriate manner earlier..........
Ahem.....
How dare you suggest that someone use ANYTHING not specifically designed for a motorcycle, on a motorcycle. Imagine the hazards and dangers involved! Plus, it will probably void the warranty and completely ruin the oil.
There were many well paid engineers (not gonna mention all the marketing folks involved) who were paid to design a motorcycle specific GPS. They are MUCH smarter than you, and know MUCH better what will work best for you.
I can't understand why you people who ride motorcycles are never satisfied to just go along with the flow and just do what has been determined to be best for you.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Enjoy the family, friends, and wine! I know I am!! |

As I just posted on another thread, a modern smart phone does it all.
+1
I have mentioned this in an earlier post too. The smart phone does it all and does it well. Even with heavy tree cover or parked in garages it never loses its signal. The smart phone also can be used as mp3, bluetooth, calculator (for gas mileage), record your route, and any other app you download. The voice navigation comes through the Vision's speakers. The best thing is the smartphone maps are never outdated because they load from Google each time the Maps app is accessed. The maps are always the latest and greatest. Since the maps are updated on the fly, it shows traffic and construction and will automatically route around problem areas. And, if you use Android, it's all FREE!
I have used many GPS's and I prefer the smartphone way better than them. Its multi-functional capability makes the possibilities endless. I have only found one down side...it is not waterproof, but neither are a lot of non-motorcycle specific units.
I almost bought the Victory GPS solely for the water proof feature. I'm glad I did not because I found that I have never needed a GPS while it's raining. I can toss the phone in the glove box if a shower does pop up. A non-waterproof GPS will not fit.
As for not being able to see it in the sunlight...not usually a problem when I set the screen to its brightest setting. There is also the night mode which blacks the screen and makes the roads bright. Even though this feature is meant for night use it makes it easy to read in direct sunlight.
Mounting options are endless for smart phones. Google will show hundreds of choices for any particular phone.
I am going to carry a phone anyway. So, I decided that I did not need two GPS's. I use the phone and it has served me well. |

Posts: 880 Orlando, FL | A phone GPS with MAPS is what I use and it works everywhere a regular GPS works. Now, some phone GPS apps do not have maps and need a cell connection to D/L the map as you move along. So those will not work in places where you do not get a cell phone signal. But dedicated phone apps such as Tom Tom and Magellan include the maps and work everywhere. I put it in my glove box...... (you guys can't see the damned GPS in the sun anyhow) and just listen to the directions!

Posts: 763 Anderson, IN (48mi NE of downtown Indianapolis) | You do not need a GPS signal nor a cell signal for a Smartphone to work. Cache the map before going to an area you know there is no signal. When the phone loses the signal it will use the cached map. When the phone picks up the signal again it will switch back. You can take your phone anywhere in the world Google has a map and it will work as a GPS...even Zimbabwe. |

Posts: 548 Mount Vernon, WA United States | I used a Garmin StreetPilot III for many years on a RAM mount, but with technology these days, I just use my Android Phone (Samsung Epic 4G) if I need a gps. In this area area at least, there isn't really any need to see it. It just speaks the directions to my headset. (I have speakers in my helmet).
If I find I need to see it, I'll just get a ram mount for it. |

Posts: 258 Akron, Ohio | I use a TomTom 550XXL. Huge screen and easy enough to read even in the sun. I did make a sun shiedl for it that helps quite a bit. I have it in a waterproof box on a ram mount. Works well with gloves. I believe I paid around $125 a few years ago. Nice part it came with free life time map updates.
