Avon Cobras, much better handling (wet ot dry), no cupping and they are quieter.

If you do a lot of 2-up touring with gear, or pull a trailer, pay attention to the difference in load ratings. You may find that the added weight capacity of the Dunlop is something that you need/want.

Or perhaps you just want the peace of mind.

My Mickey Thompson Sportsmans are awesome looking, and because I no longer use the kickstand, it's much easier to check/change the oil. What kind of oil do you use? Oops. Another dead kitten...

Actually, I got a Metzler Marathon in the rear. Seems to handle okay, is wearing well, and not too noisy.

I'm going to try Metzler next time. I wear tires out fast enough, so if I don't like them I'll go back to the E3 in a year or less. The E3s did great on the Dragon riding two up. My issue is the way I wear the sides of the front tire and end up with a one inch band around the tire. I understand about the harder compound. Maybe It's the way I ride. Also every E3, both 18" and 21" on the Ness wheel start to shimmy at about 45 mph if you let go of the bars. If you don't grab them it will get violent. Even with Dynebeads, does the same thing. Not the bike, it did it on both Visions I owned. Cyclegear quoted me $224 for the rear just a couple of days ago. I've put air in the back tire a couple in times this week and I'm afraid I'm going to be replacing it sooner than I'd like.

I have preached this every time a tire thread pops up. I was told by a factory rep from Bridgestone in Daytona two years ago that I should be fine with a Exedras. But that was his opinion and NOT Bridgestone. I just didn't feel comfortable keeping them on, but they are a great set of tires for the 1000 miles I put on them. I ride a lot on the super slab when I get out and with the heat and weight, it was in my mind about a potential blow out.

I know a lot of folks are coming off of 600lb cruisers (me included) and have never had to worry about weight ratings. I just want all of us to be as safe as possible. I would feel horrible if I just let this thread go and something were to happen and I could have said something.

I hope it helps.

My two cents says that the E3 may be the only option, but I find them to be the best option, even if there were hundred other choices. Keep them properly inflated, suspension set for rated load and you'll get about 12,000 to 13,000 miles out of the rear tire, to the wear bar, at least I have. They always feel sure footed and handle the slab and twisties very well in all kinds of weather. It seems the harder folks think, the more confused they get and confuse everyone else in the process. However, I do value the power of choice.

Chris, well put. The E3 is a great tire and the only reason I ever looked to change was because of the noise they develop after a few thousand miles. It was never about performance for me. I am probably getting labeled as the tire man on VR as I can hear all your sighs. Tire and oil threads are very popular, but tire threads seem to have less controversy.

My rear tire is the Bridgestone and I have put a little over 8,000 miles on it with no problems at all. From the looks of it right now I should be able to get 12,000 miles out of it and I will probably go with it again as it actually seems a little more stable with more grip in the mountains. No problems 2 up and fully loaded with luggage either.

I think you stay confused Brian, it's that infernal rip service you work with. 16k is excellent, and I attribute that to the road conditions and tempature you ride under mostly. Here in Virginia, too much course concrete slabs to run on that eats away the rubber, or maybe the weight that your bike carries, eh. also, if you are twisting to the left and right more than I, you get to use rubber that I don't get to touch too often, but I sure try.

Interesting info and a safe load calculator for various large motorcycles including the 2010 Vision on this website.

10,000 miles both sets of E 3's . If I get 10,000 on the current set I will be happy . It is a good tire

I replaced the E3's with Avon's which in my opinion were much better. I'm a big fan of Dunlops but in this instance the Avons were every bit as good and lasted a bit longer. They also made far less noise. The tread pattern WILL give you a very slight shimmy feel at ultra low speed on coarse road surfaces, but I'm talking ultra slow speed like just before a stop.

WELL, I went with the E3s again, scorebo's post made my choice easy. I rire a lot of two up and was concerned about the weight, I got 13'000 miles from my first set, 11,500 miles on the second set. I will check my air pressure more often and see how many miles I get this time.

Just for future reference, the difference in max weight allowance between the Dunlop and Avon is less than 100lbs..... In other words they are both tour rated so it becomes a non-issue. Hope this helps someone.....

First let me say glad to see you back Teach.

I do have a couple of questions (and a comment) about "tour rated" tires being an acceptable substitute for the E3.

Isn't the GVWR computed with the OEM tire at max inflation? If we drop the tire load rating by 100 lbs have we not also dropped the GVWR by the same amount?

Based on those assumptions, if I do the math, my wife and I can safely carry 75 lbs of clothing, gear, and tools on the Vision. If I put on a set of Avons with a 100lb lesser load rating, one of us has to shed 25 lbs right away just to avoid overloading the bike, and thats without adding any gear.

I certainly wont have any complaints about the size of the Visions saddle bags if she wont ride with me because all her stuff is at home in the closet.

ADVANTAGE AVON!

On the other hand my ability to ride at all might be seriously threatened if she though I was out having fun without her. So lets scratch that idea!

Now - I can tell my wife that she needs to lose the weight, but I had better be wearing a full face helmet, and Kevlar/ Nomex blend underwear or standing behind a locked steel door with a six month supply of food and water when I do it.

Seems to me that buying another set of E3s is an easy way to maintain domestic tranquility and to stay safe(r).

My first E3's went away pretty fast once I found out I could line lock the front brake and boil the hides to make all my friends think I was super stuntah, in total control over a piece of equipment just slightly smaller than the space shuttle and/or nuts, but the bloom is off that rose now, and I'm looking for quite a long return on my Metzler Marathons. The weight issue doesn't really bother me since I'm on a Street model, live where it doesn't get too hot and my wife's still skinny, even if I'm not so much anymore. But when it does go, I think it's the darkside for me. If I'm on the slab all the time anyway, and the scooter tire wears square, then maybe the car tire will wear round, and they'll meet in the middle, except the middle for the CT is 50,000+ miles further down the road.

BTW: If oil threads kill kittens, do tire threads kill puppies? (=0>
