Posts: 495 Carrollton, TX | It is with great sadness that I report that two of my closest friends Bruce Bricker and Steve Claterbaugh and Bruce’s wife Shannon and Steve’s girlfriend Kathy Smith were killed about 2:45 PM CDT on Sunday 7-3-11 north of Canton, TX on Hwy 19 on their Victory Vision’s. A guy in a Mustang pulled in front of them and hit them head on. He is in jail on a $2 million bail and has been charged with four counts of criminally negligent homicide. Bruce and Steve and I rode together almost weekly. We all rode together Saturday the day before the accident and had just planned four day weekend trip to Eureka Springs, AR later this month and a weeklong trip in September to the NE area. One of Bruce’s first trips was with me to Helen, GA for the 2008 SE Victory Rally. We logged about 35,000 miles together over the last three years. Steve also road with us on a lot of those miles and I did a few trips with just Steve. There was nothing they enjoyed more than riding their bikes. Bruce had just moved up to a new 2011 Vision from his 2008 and couldn’t get enough time in the saddle with it. I am so thankful for their friendship and all the great riding we have done together over the last three years. Every time we hit the road we got to see a part of heaven. I am blessed for the time we had together and sadder than words can express that you’re both gone. I will always miss you both. When you see me riding just swoop down and soar along side of me. Here are some links to the news stories on their accident. http://www.wfaa.com/news/local/Familes-Remember-Four-Killed-In-Van-Zandt-County-Crash-124982534.html http://www.kltv.com/story/15020450/collision-between-car-and-motorcycles-kills-4 http://tylerpaper.com/article/20110704/NEWS01/110709890 You can tell by the photos that this bridge in addition to the two lanes had a full emergence lane on both sides of the two lanes and Bruce and Steve moved clear to the far right along the cement wall of the bridge and the driver in the Mustang came all the way to his left past Bruce’s and Steve’s lane and hit them head on in their emergence lane. There was nothing more they could have done to avoid this irresponsible driver. Drive careful and I hope to see you all on the road somewhere.

| I am sadden and enraged by this. The guy was probly texting. He needs to be put away for a long time and stripped of all driving priv's for the rest of his life. The poor family's and kid's of the couples must be completely crushed. My heart goes out to them and if there is anything I can do to help from here let me know. My bikes pre-owner wrecked, his then mine now, bike at 70mph and hit a guard rail to boot and is still around to talk about it. I feel that this bike is a survivor and is lucky for me. Dain |

When we heard the news my wife said she didn't want me to ride my Vision for a few days as she was scared of Fourth of July Weekend drunks on the road. That night I just had to ride so I rode about 30 minutes in the country thinking of those poor couples the whole time. It's very sobering when you realize how dangerous our hobby can be. |

Posts: 3006 San Antonio, TX | Craig,
Thank you for the post. What a tragedy. I read this post just before I left work...and it took my breath away. I read the accounts and watched the coverage online.
I had a lot to think about as I prepared to mount up for the ride to the house.
My wife used to own a store that sold "Country" and hand crafted merchandise. So, two or three times a year we would drive to Canton for First Monday sales. She would meet her vendors and look for the special deals on the prairie. We would go up on Wednesday night to the hotel and get up before the sun to find the best deals. If I got lucky I would find a few things for myself.
We would stay West of Athens and drive to Canton every morning. Sunday afternoon we would head home. Monday I would go to work to rest. I remember what that road looked like before the rebuild a few years back. After all that work widening and providing hard shoulders I felt safer on my pre-dawn drive.
Never could I imagine that this could happen....not in daylight....not ever.
I can only pray for the friends and families involved. At least the police got the charges right.
I hope the prosecutors, police and judges have their facts in order so that the Jury can make the best decision on behalf of justice. I will even pray for the defense attorney so he can appeal the verdict and lose because the case against the man is solid and he had the best representation for his defense.
God bless all the riders tonight...

I live within 75 miles of this and have been to those flea markets. People simply don't pay attention for whatever reason. They're busy talking about what they bought or sold or whatever. I've had several people wander into my lane a few times, scared the hell out of me. |

Posts: 495 Carrollton, TX | Thank you all from the families and me for the kind thoughts and prayers! I have and will continue to share these with the families. As you know many people just cannot relate to our passion for riding. Many look at it as an unnecessary risky activity. To most of us riding is a spiritual experience, one that brings us close to Nature and God. We see and experience what so many never do. We meet people that we would otherwise never meet and learn of greatness within them that we otherwise may never have discovered. I have been in sales all my life whether it in my own businesses or working for a company and hence I meet a lot of people and have a huge network but I have meet the best people and developed the best friendships through riding. They are the ones that are accountable, predictable and dependable. They have backbone and are always there when you need them. You don’t need to ask because they are always vigilante and have a sense of when and where to be to help. Bruce and Steve were both like this! Bruce and I had planned to ride to Helen, GA again this year to see many of you at the SE Victory Rally but he needed the time to spend with his sister and I had an opportunity to do a long trip with some other friends. I have learned these things; as long as man walks this earth nothing will trump our relationships with others and man will never make anything that will compete with what God has created in nature. Cherish and cultivate your relationships and get out there on your bike and experience more of the awe-inspiring nature this country has to offer. I hope I have an opportunity to meet and ride with many more of you. Ride safe and may you ride many more years before God calls you home. Here are the Visitation and Funeral arrangements for Bruce Bricker. The Visitation will be this Thursday from 7 to 9 PM at: The Dalton & Son Funeral Home 1550 N Stemmons Fwy Lewisville, TX 75077 (972) 436-6511
The Funeral will be this Friday at 2:00 PM at: First Baptist Church of Lewisville 1251 W. Valley Ridge Blvd. Lewisville, TX 75077 (972) 436-5502 Steve Claterbaugh’s family is still working on his arrangements but to Steve’s wishes they will be much less formal and probably a week from this Friday or Saturday. I will let you all know.

| I am so sorry for your loss, they were riding one of the safest Bikes on the road today but it doesn't matter if the guy behind the wheel cares not if his actions take you out or not. I just hope the jerk behind the wheel is haunted by this the rest of his life and never gets another full night sleep because he sees their faces every time he closes his eyes. They will be riding the roads of heaven on bikes that never need repairs or gas with smiles on there faces because every day is a great day to ride. Ride free Bruce, Steve, Shannon, and Kathy, you will be missed by your Brothers and Sisters of the Road.

Posts: 495 Carrollton, TX | Thank you all for all your kind thoughts and prayers. It not only means a lot to me and the families but to every member of this forum seeing the level of caring and support they can expect from us all. I was a pallbearer for Bruce and Shannon at their funeral today. A huge crowd of family and friends attended and the services were great. Support came from everywhere. Rick Fairless and about 10 of his employees from Strokers Dallas where we all bought our Victory Visions were there as well as Mike McMillan the District Sales Manager for Victory. To me that defines a whole new level of customer support… one that is priceless. We are still working on finalizing a “Celebration of Life” event for both Steve and Bruce with a memorial ride to follow. We are tentatively looking at holding this on the morning of Saturday the 23rd at Strokers Dallas and then do the memorial ride. I will let you know once we have it all confirmed. I also wanted to share with you all two of my favorite quotes related to living our life. The best use of your life is to so live your life that the use of your life outlives your life. Strive to be the man that every young boy hopes to be and every old man wishes he was. Warmest regards,

| It brought me great solice when my wife died, and then when my mom passed this past December 11 months later.
"Death is nothing at all. I have only slipped away into the next room. I am I, and you are you. Whatever we were to each other, that we still are. Call me by my old familiar name; speak to me in the easy way, which you always used. Put no difference in your tone; wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Pray, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was, let it be spoken without effect without the trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was; there is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well."
