Looking in the Service Manual, it has two molded on hook like tabs, one one each side (3 & 9 O'clock) and the manual recommends a soft pry tool like a plastic windshield removal tool. Get gently under one side and press in S-L-O-W-L-Y to unseat one side and it should come right off.

huh? remove the console and you can push the tabs together and it pops right out. You did say you were going to paint it didn't you?

I carbon fibered my dash and more. The trick to the key cover is turn it and the two tangs will come loose and then just wiggle it out.
Your hard part will be getting the switches back in. There a very very tight fit. You'll have to clean the square holes really good with a sharp razor.
