Posts: 132 New York | Hi all,
I have questions I'd like to ask of all you with experience in this regard:
I want to upgrade from my ancient blackberry curve phone however I'm having a hard time deciding on which phone... and most importantly which phone will work the best on the Vision...What should I get??? The Iphone4 or wait for the release of the Iphone5 this fall..or one of the Android Phones????
My sticky point is this:
I want a smartphone that I am able to hookup/wire up etc.. to the Vision for gps use.., calls, and music playing ability similar to using my iPod.
Also, would like to find out if there is a mount that can cradle the smartphone in landscape mode on the dash therefore using it as a gps system..
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!!! |

Posts: 3773 Pittsburgh, PA | for ME i use a Thunderbolt (droid) phone to stream pandora internet radio into my radio through the 3.5mm cord. i extended my cord into my trunk so the phone can be charged while i ride. i ALSO has the ipod in the glove box so i can easily swap between the 3.5 cord and the ipod cord. i cancelled my satelite radio over a year ago, because i had too many defective radios and poor customer service. |

Riding the bike and talking on the phone are mutually exclusive. If you can't curb your desire to yak on the phone and enjoy the countryside, sell the bike and glue the phone to your head!
Same thing with the 'social networks' I have no desire to read a constant stream of messaging from someone about how their bowel movement is progressing. |

Posts: 323 Troy, NY | I use the iPhone 4 with the new black iPod cord from Victory. I use the gps and play music at the same time. The music fades and the gps voice comes out. Works great! I use the MotionX-Drive app. It is $.99 for the app and $25 a year for voice commands. Well worth the $25 bucks! I haven't found a great mount to put the phone on the center console. For now, I just keep the phone in the glove compartment and just use the voice commands on the gps. No picture.....but no distraction either. Now for voice calls. I have not tried and didn't feel the need to try. I have the Scala headset I could Bluetooth to get voice calls. I only use the Scala on long trips with the wife. Most of the time she calling me...so therefore I haven't tried the phone call route |

| I use a Thunderbolt android phone. I connected a bluetooth reciever to the ipod cord so I can connect wirelessly. My music and gps comes through the speakers however the fwd/back controls dont always work. I have not found a mount that I like yet but will probably be making something out of a car dock and waterproof box.
As far as the iphone 4 vs 5, I would wait till the 5s come out and decide then. At worst the 4s will be reduced. |

southwest oh | I use the priginal Motorola Android--don't know the model name--hooked through the audio system with the "earphone" plug-in. I carry it in the glove box and keep it powered up there also. I haven't found the need to ever look at a FPS unless I'm setting it. Never missed a turn, except in Chicago. There are a couple places there that drive a GPS (3 different ones) nuts. As far as calling and/or answering: I don't do either while riding. In fact, I learned a long time ago that just because a phone rings, it doesn't mean I have to answer it. That's what I have voicemail for--even at home. By the way, the Androind comes with Google Maps/Navigation with live traffic info, free. You can also download other map systems if you like, e.g., MapQuest. As for the iPhone 4 vs the 5, I can't say, but you really ought to decide what you want the phone to do and buy whatever make/model will do it. The point is, whatever you buy, like all electronics, it will be obsolete before you get it. Hope this helps . . . er . . . at least doesn't harm.

Posts: 132 New York | Thank you for all the good advice guys!!!.. Much appreciated..!
And Just to let you know..even though I mentioned calls... I honestly would avoid that for the most part riding down the road...
What I think I'll do is wait for the Iphone5 to come out which is supposed to happen this fall then decide ultimately android or Iphone..
Again thanks everyone! |

That's the same reason I liked to go on post maintenance test flights, as an inspection leadman, it gave me about 90 minutes while the test flight crew did their checks (and kept the insurance active, I never worried because I trusted, but verified, the mechanics and my inspectors and I usually knew the flight test crew) that some knob whistle couldn't call me or corner me on the floor with some stupid question that 37 seconds of thought by the person involved would have resolved itself. |

Listen, this is all about using the smartphone as a GPS (instead of buying an expensive Garmin GPS unit) and a MP3 / Ipod music player. I'm positive I won't use it to place calls or take calls.. Don't get your panties too much in a bunch!!!

| Hi Joe, The Cradle I ordered from Ram Mount is Ram-Hol-un4u, that is for the Iphone 4 with a defender Otter box case. The cradle for just the Iphone is Ram-Hol-ap9u. I already have the ram mount on my bike. You still have to order a ram ball to mount to the cradle. I ordered the Dockextender from "Cablejive" part# DockX2b $29.95. I already have the $99.00 Ipod cable from Victory that charges the Iphone/Ipod. I hope this helps. |

Posts: 880 Orlando, FL | Ok, ok, ok. Excuseeeeeeee my mistake. Here's hoping no one is using the phone to text or make calls while riding. But hey, everyone has a choice.
I use my iPhone for it's iPod feature and the GPS (I use MotionX GPS drive with voice command and Rachels' voice). It's heaven having all my iPod songs, Pandora, and my GPS coming thru my speakers! I plug in my phone and leave it in my glovebox. Ya can't really see the freaking screen in the sun and my GPS gives voice directions.

| Slipgrip makes a bunch of mounts for different phones that uses the ram mount system. In most cases you will also need to get a phone sleeve for the phone. Look on eBay and you will find them - warning - the items appear to include the protection case, but they are not included. I'm a little P.O.ed at them, but the mount is a good mount. Also keep in mind the cases are NOT water proof. You will also need to get the Ram arm for the bike.
I have a Droid X, and I added a small magnet to the mount so the phone automatically switches to car mode when I clip it on (giant buttons). I also wired up a USB charger, otherwise the phone will go into sleep mode when using the GPS off the phone battery.
Some smart phones will not work with gloved fingers so choose wisely if you intend to wear gloves and use the device.
I use an iphone adaptor with an Anycom FIPO Bluetooth adaptor to pipe the sound through the radio, the quality isn't the best, but I can hookup any Bluetooth device. Mostly I use the Droid's Bluetooth to pipe into my chatterbox headset.

Posts: 262 Flowery Branch Ga | As far as Android versus Iphone------ Most any app is free or low cost on Android. I have the Commando from Verizon. This phone is military grade making it water, dust, shock, and break resistant. They replace it for anything but loss and total destuction,I.E. you run over it with a truck. This is a 3G phone. It has about the same abilities as a Droid X. Hope this helps.

Posts: 77 Bainville, & Mesa, AZ, MT | I have a droid II mounted on mine, picked up a mount at one of the Corporate Verizon stores, I think they had them for just about every phone. The one I have is a suction cup mount and I have it stuck on the dash just behind the windshield. I also added a couple power outlets so it is powered full time. We use it for everything from a phone to listening to Pandora radio. I have it hooked up via bluetooth to my scala rider in my helmet, so far it works pretty good.
I will try to post of pic of the mount.

Warning, warning, warning!!!
You could loose your phone with one of those suck-tion mounts. I lost the mount for my Garmin, but luckily the GPS was stowed away and not being used. Nothing beats the security of a screwed down attachment. |

Posts: 77 Bainville, & Mesa, AZ, MT | That phone isn't going anywhere even if the suction cup lets go, the power cable goes down under the windshield and is zip tied on, the most it will do is bounce around on the dash. There is about $890 worth of stuff tied on the dash and handle bars of this scoot, everything is securely fastened on.
I don't like to drill a bunch of unnessary holes if I can get away with it. Everything is removable without any damage to the bike.
You are right though on the suction cups, they can let go and if used on a bike they should be backed up with some kind of tether.

Posts: 466 Grand Cane, LA | sgiacci, you could do like I did and mount a piece of clear headlight repair plastic onto the dash and the suction base will stay on until you release it. I did this to mine and I've made several long trips and have yet to lose my GPS off the dash. I just cut a small circle of the stuff and stuck it on the dash. It has a smooth enough surface for the suction base mount to hold on and the plastic is clear enough that you barely notice it on the dash when the suction mount is not on there.

Posts: 208 Wichita, Kansas | Why is everybody on this guy for his unstated phone usage? There have been at least 100 posts about Ipod use and controls, but never a single comment (except the one I made) about people that are searching their Ipod for tunes being worse than those that dial one phone number. Get your priorities straight. Dinking around with electronics, be it phone, GPS or Ipod is bad whether you're in a car or on a bike. Personally, I think the remote Ipod controls are a hazard and should be eliminated and Victory made a bad safety judgement putting Ipod screens on the tank display where the rider has to remove eyes from the road.
End of rant, you are now free to flame. |
