After turning the key to start I get nothing and then press again it fires up. This morning it took 4 tries before contact. This has been going on for a few weeks now but the 4 times made me a bit nervous. Is the switch going bad after almost 20k? Also is this a warranty thing?

Mine's been doing for a little while as well, I think it is the neutral safety switch, and at times even when I have the clutch all the way disengated it won't crank. I move the lever in and out a few times and presto, she fires. It will do it at least once or twice a week, and yes, it's in neutral also. Most of the time I have to depress the clutch to get it to fire, that's about 75% of the time lately.

I would guess it to be the switch if repeated pushing without doing anything else makes it work. I have never heard of one going bad, but I am sure it's possible. It could also be a sticky or weak starter solenoid. In either case I would expect it to be a warranty item. But you never know for sure, these extended warranties seem to be a crap shoot depending on dealer presentation, claims adjuster's mood, and the direction the wind is blowing.
Good Luck.

Good Luck.My two closest dealers are 100 miles away. I don't mind the drive but then if they find the problem they will have to order parts so then it's a 400 mile plus a lot of time fix.

Funny thing is after you have been riding and stop for gas or a drink it doesn't do this. This is also the first FI bike I've ever had that is cold natured. It is so weird and runs like a carbed bike after it's been sitting all night even after a couple of minutes warming up.

You might try a can of electronic contact cleaner from Radio Shack or the office supply store. My VENTURE sometimes did the same thing and a few squirts of contact cleaner on both the button and the kill switch cleared it right up, remember both sit out exposed 100% of the time, both facing up and susceptible to whatever falls out of the sky.
You might also try exercising the kill switch once in a while to keep it's contactors free of oxidation which is an insulator. Either is a pretty cheap insurance hedge against a 100 mile ride and $50 for the dealer to do the same thing.

I'd check your battery terminals first. I had the same symptom with mine. Positive terminal was loose. I installed some star washers between the terminals. No problems since.

you can pick up electric cleaner at auto store too. It might be worth the effort to take the switch housing apart and see if there is corrosion in side. Even pull the wires on the clutch switch and spay then down. Put a small dab of grease where ever you can.

Careful with spraying the stuff around your paint

If you're going to take the housing apart and clean the contacts, clean the kill switch also. I "dead-stick" it through my neighborhood, into my driveway/garage from about 1/4 mile out after a late night shift. (Shift into neutral, kill the motor and coast all the way into my garage. My "Bob Hoover" arrival for you aviation buffs.)

Anyhoo, I notice that when I use the kill switch as opposed to turning it off with the key, the starter button seems to hang up and be dead sometimes when I go to start it the next day. Cycling the kill switch clears it up. If you don't use the kill switch, disregard this advice.

Songfan;
Can you pour Iced Tea up?
For those of you puzzled, Bob Hoover IS the best exhibiton pilot ever! One of his tricks was to flim himself while rolling his SHRIKE COMMANDER with both engines feathered (engines off and props edge on to the airstream) and pouring a glass of iced tea into a glass that was on the 'up' side of the picture and the earth up and sky down in the windscreen. Called it 'enegry management' find it on YOUTUBE or for those in the South Y'ALLTUBE.
