I have the Garmin StreetPilot 2730 (TourTech) and the gold tint is pealing off the screen. Has anyone seen this before? The last time I had to get service from Garmin, they had a flat fee based on the unit. They would just swap your unit for a rebuild one. Overall, I would say it was a good experience.

JohnnyG, I hadn't seen the gold tint peeling off. But I just sent my Zumo 550 back to Garmin today, as my Zumo acted like someone was pushing on the screen continuously...Talked with Customer service for about 5 minutes and then he offered the flat fee return and a new refurbished Zumo 550 for $150...Sure beats buying a new one for $600 or a new Zumo 665 for $800!!!

That is exactly what happened to my Zumo 550 and they offered the same thing. That was maybe 2 years ago. The new one works great.

My 2720 did the same thing. I sent it in and they replaced the unit for about $170, I think. Course, I only sent it for replacement after the whole unit crapped out on me (after over three years and 40,000 miles). I lived with the peeling tint for over a year (just peeled it all off when it started flaking badly) with no real problems. Was just a little dimmer.

My 2720 just decided to flake as well. I went out one morning to fire up the bike like I do every other day, and the screen looked like it was falling apart! It was wigging out for a bit until I peeled all the lining off and reset it. Seems to be working fine otherwise.......

make sure you get the 79.3mm x 64.77mm digitizer. there will be some sold on ebay claiming its for a zumo 550 but it is slightly smaller and you loose your waterproof capabilities. the 79.3 x 64.77 is a manufacturer replacement, they will be twice as much as the smaller ones (15.00- 20.00) you will need one like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Touch-Screen-Digitizer-Garmin-Zumo-450-550-...

this is who i bought mine from, id recommend them, took 2 weeks to ship

Good information Jeff,

I decided to order one for a future replacement. My screen has some small scratches but no flaking yet. Maybe I should add a screen protector like the one on my cell phone. Two years ago I had to send the Zumo 550 in to Garmin because it locked up (was a year old), they sent me a refurbished one at no cost, it's been working fine.

Same thing happened to me on my 2720.

In my case, it was a little over-spray from some detailer that got on the GPS' touch screen. Crystallized that film in a hurry.

I just spoke to Garmin. They said it will not affect the operation of the 2720 and if I want it fixed, the flat rate would be $170. I think I will pass or wait until the unit completely fails.
