Bigfoot (from the VOG) and I met with a Federal Investigator that works for the NHTSA this evening for a couple of hours. They have officially launched an investigation into the front fender failures and have sent notice to Polaris. Included in the notice is a very detailed questionnaire that must be completed and returned by next week. You can view the investigation (which is public information) by clicking on the following link - http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchResults

I am hoping the link works but if it does not, go to their website under Vehicle Owners Tab / Investigations and enter in PE14006 (this is the case number). You will find a couple of documents that include the resume with good info on number of Visions produced, etc and the letter the NHTSA sent to Polaris with all the questions. The website will be down until 11PM tonight with planned maintenance

This does not guarantee a recall but it is a great step in determining if this is indeed a safety issue and a recall is warranted. I am just glad it is going to the next level.

For those of you that posted complaints on the NHTSA site - THANK YOU! This is the reason for the investigation.

By the way, the investigator is an engineer and a big time motorcycle enthusiast - he knows his stuff!

Keep checking the site for updates if you are interested.

Wow! Be interesting to see what happens. Wonder if Polaris will be spanked. They have been a bad boy about this.

SUMMARY:
The Office of Defects Investigati0n (ODI) has received 17 consumer complaints from subject motorcycle owners alleging the back half of the two piece front fender becomes jammed between the tire and lower fairing assembly when it separates from the front fork. Owners report the jammed fender results in compromised steering control. When remedied, many owners receive goodwill consideration from the manufacturer. EWR warranty and field reports show elevated activity potentially related to this issue. Web forums also show considerable activity surrounding the failing front fender. This investigation is being opened to further asses the severity and frequency of the alleged failure. The ODI reports cited above can be reviewed at http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/owners/SearchNHTSAID under the following complaint identification numbers: 10558244, 10543623, 10541967, 10538271, 10535938, 10535411, 10535066, 10534913, 10534783, 10534753, 10534743, 10482373, 10482347, 10474096, 10469285, 10468997, 10430546

If you had a breakage and more importantly it jammed and locked your steering you can file a complaint at the NHTSA by clicking on this link - https://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/VehicleComplaint/index.xhtml

This may be old news, but I was looking at a 2014 vision and noticed that the front fender has been redesigned. Still has a plastic rear half but the front half is different with a possible new way to fasten the rear plastic piece.

just checked the fiche and the 2014 rear portion of the front fender has the same part# as all the years back to the beginning. The mount system is also the same. Seems they didn't change anything. Oh well...
