Don't you hate it when you get finally motivated; get your bike jacked up; everything ready to take off the front wheel; so you can get the tire replaced...

..and come to find out that your socket hex wrench set DOES NOT include the 16mm that you need? And you don't have a 5/8's socket hex key either?

Off to Harbor Freight I go

What makes me even madder... I can't find a 16mm hex key socket ANYWHERE in central Maryland.

Harbor Freight - Nope.
Sears - Nope.
Lowes - Nope.
Home Despot - Nope.
Pep Boys - Nope

Guess I'll have to order it off the Internet somewhere...

All of the hex key socket sets that I've seen around here; are missing 15mm and 16mm in the set. Which is really frikken weird.

No, but thank you for offering Varyder. I'll have one in a couple of days (ordering one off of the Internet).

Just can't believe that I cannot find one here locally.

I just also checked Autozone, Advance Auto, Salvo auto parts, Tractor Supply and Ace hardware. None, zilch, nada... to be found around.

Awwwww.... poor Will.

SO SAD - when you know you can get that size in EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD - except 3 (2 African countries and the US of A).

Maybe someday you will catch up .... lets hope so !!!

Don,

16mm hex key sockets are available from US suppliers, though not in my immediate area.

Go mix another martini and contemplate that.

No problem Will !

I have had every metric size since 1965. So it's definitly not a problem!!!

And I ain't never used ANY of them since I decided that I would rather RIDE ... than WRENCH. Let the mechanic do it - don't be so cheap .... if you can't affort a mechanic - think about how many dollars you are depriving your LADY of ....

I learned the HARD WAY that trying to fix EVERYTHING yourself is FALSE ECONOMICS.

So now - I have a martini (after I get home from the dealer) with my BEAUTIFUL wife - and ride again, tomorrow. Life is GOOD !

Hey Don?

Here's a frikken tidbit of knowledge for you... I can wrench and get my bike(s) back into operation ***FASTER*** than taking it to a dealer... and ***save*** a hell of a lot more money to boot.

Who's being deprived here?

You sound like ME 30 years ago !!! EXACT words I used.

Except ... my WIFE was being deprived. And my DAUGHTER. And my FRIENDS. And my DIGNITY - cuz I don't know EVERYTHING (I do, but I'm modest).

So ... I stopped being CHEAP and started buying better quality, made friends with my mechanics, and paid more time and attention to important things - like cutting the lawn, and sex. I'm the happiest 70 year old you ever saw - and looking forward to 100 !!!

What really annoys me is that Vic used a size that nobody else ever used. The internal hex is very common for motorcycle axles, and there's a specific tool available (Motion Pro among others) that has the four common sizes - none of which are what Vic uses. I've used mine on pretty much every manufacturer's bike made, the only one it hasn't fit is Vic.

If you are in a real hurry, and 5/8 will work, just go to the hardware store and get a bolt with a 5/8 head and some nuts put the nuts on with a jam nut and use an open wrench. Or if you are lucky, look where they sell all thread connectors and see if one of the big ones is 5/8 outside hex and use it.

Well... I ordered a 15mm and a 16mm 1/2dr Hex key sockets from Amazon, so it will complete my current Hex socket set that is MISSING/SKIPPING those sizes ...goes from 14mm to 17mm. Weird.

Good idea about using a bolt with a 5/8 head and some jam nuts though; Bug's Zedi

Thanks for all the help and listening to me vent guys.

Strap the new tire on the back and plan a short trip east to Bel Air and it's done. Have jack, hex key socket, and tire machine.
