How many miles do you average on a tank of gas? How about with one person verses two?
My fuel gauge cannot be correct. It says full when I top off but soon thereafter falls to 3/4. The gas light comes on at about 170-180 miles yet I don't recall ever topping off with more than 4 gallons. I should have 2 gallons left. How far do you get before your gas light comes on and how far have you pushed it hoping not to run out?

I usually get about 190-200 before light comes on, and I once rode 30 miles after the light came on.

You have to fuel the vision slowly. When you think it's topped off, shake the bike and wait a couple seconds and then slowly top it off again. That will get you about another gallon. Like you say, 4 gallons and getting 170-180 miles is about right. That's normally what I get. If I top it off the way I suggest, when I see my low fuel light come on I will be able to put right at 5 gallons in it. On the highway and keeping the RPM's just below 2800 I will get about 44 MPG. On the road I will look for a gas station after 175 miles or so and put in about 4 gallons

When filling, put your foot on the floor board and rock/bounce the bike a bit. It burps the tank and you can pack it full and get 220 miles easy.

When my light comes on, The bike takes 5 gallons. That can be anywhere from 170-210 miles, depending on how I'm riding.
Most I've squeezed into a tank was 6.1 gallons.

In always start looking for a gas station around 200 miles. Take a moment to look at your gas tanks, yes there are two. The right side one contains the fuel pump and the level transmitter but when the bike is on the side stand it is way above the other tank. When my bike gets down to maybe 3/8 tank level at around 130 miles it will start giving me false low level lights when I first turn it on. As soon as I stand it up the level will respond and the light goes out pretty quickly. The same kind of thing happens when you are filling the tank. The right side tank where the filler is located will fill right up and it will take a few seconds for the gas to flow into the left tank through the hoses. If you want to do something while you wait go ahead and shake things around but until the gas flows to the lower tank you won't get any more gas into the high, right side tank. It takes some patience to fill both tanks on a Vision because you need to let gas flow from right tank to left tank or you will start out a bit short of full.

As long as you don't run out of gas why care how far you get on a tank? A fuel gauge is just a fancy idiot light.
How often does 20 or 30 miles more on a tank make a difference? I ride tank to tank and stop for gas about 190 miles. I need the break and I don't waste time trying to get a little more in the tank.

Do you ride till empty or just try to get as many short trips out of a tank?

My gauge drops like a rock in the first 38 miles then slows down till a 1/4 tank then drops quickly. Never ran out with Anny yet.

Do simple math on your mileage to find out how many miles per gallon you getting on the tank. Check out your crossover to make sure that you get good fuel flow going back-and-forth and I'm just assuming there may be a kink or something. When filling your tank just be slow and steady at the end make sure it's on the kickstand, a little bit a rocking doesn't hurt but it's not necessary. I would never anymore run my tank down below a quarter of a tank you're just asking for fuel pump problems then.

After 140 or 150 miles the lite comes on. When the fuel gets low the bike doesn't run as good as when its full. The lower it get the more noticable it is. Makes me think the fuel pump doesn't keep the pressure up or something. ?

MPG sometimes is subjective, but I believe we all should get roughly around 40mpg without major mods. If you're getting only 140-150miles before the light comes on without major mods, then it could be something amiss. Hope you're doing well, Rick. Hope to get back out to Louisville again sometime for a burger.

My '12 goes about 200 miles before the low fuel light. If it's highway miles, I'll put 4.5ish gallons in (or 44 mpg) and around town it'll be closer to 5 or 40 mpg. I do agree about burping the tanks. I usually can get a good half to 3/4 gallon in if I wait for the level to drop.

I think you will have better luck filling it on the kick stand. I am not sure you are getting a full tank when it is standing.

You're probably not getting it full. Fuel it with the bike on the sidestand. I can get another half gallon in mine that way, compared to filling it with the bike standing up straight. The fuel tanks trap air when the bike is held vertical.

Also, my fuel gauge acts like an old-time reserve petcock system. By that I mean that the low fuel light comes on and the gauge reads "empty" with 1 1/2 gallons left in the tank. When the low fuel light comes on I know I've got 50 or 60 miles to find gas--just like when the old petcock systems "ran out of gas" and I had to switch to the "reserve" position. It comes on between 190 to 200 miles most of the time. I have learned that I can can go about 240 miles on a tank--on average. Sometimes more, sometimes less. I have always been able to go 200 miles without running dry.

I once (and only once) went 276 miles before refueling, but it was all downhill with a tailwind, coming down off Wolf Creek Pass with a strong storm chasing us. We were moving fast and got 52 MPG. That's not typical though. I typically get 41 or 42 MPG riding double.

Ronnie
