Knowing the issues with ethanol blended fuels, and that the recommended lowest octane rating suggested is 91.........we have 90 octane fuel available here with no ethanol. Acceptable ? Have any of you folks run this in your Vision ?

Some here have been able to run lower octanes. If the 90 doesn't ping on you during acceleration; you'll be fine.

Not running ethanol is a good thing ! i personally try not to worry about it that much as in most cases where i live i DO NOT have a choice.. so if there is a chance to run no ethanol i would try it.. i mean its not going to give me 200HP im not going to break the speed of sound, i might notice a little but snapper throttle response .? for as long as its in my tank.. after that.. its back to the same ol same ol

Hey guys, thanks and I'm going to run it for a bit. Willtill, thought I recognized your handle from the R3.com site.

Your fuel choice depends on several things. In IA, I have used 87 octane E10 for most of the life of my bike. In Colorado a lower octane fuel worked fine with no pinging in the mountains. In TN, NC & WV I had to run 91 octane gas to keep it from pinging going up and down mountains on the interstate.

With all that said, You need to experiment with the fuels available in your area. If the engine is pinging, use a higher octane. If not use a lower octane.

In reading Lloydz blog about ethanol altered fuels and the condensation wreaking havoc if left in the fuel system for long periods and with changing storage area temps for the bike, my thoughts were that by elimination of the ethanol water based component and running REAL GASOLINE that the 90 proof stuff would suffice. I assumed and probably incorrectly that the higher octane rating suggested by Victory was to offset of compensate for the alcohol in the ethanl fuels. Know what ethanol does to weed eaters and chainsaws, I think I'll opt for the 90 staright gas a while. Here in the mountains I should know soon enough if its going to ping and knock. There's always 150 octane aviation gas

Generally speaking, run the lowest octane gas that your bike can use without pinging. I've used everything from 87 octane to 91. My bike tends to need a higher octane gas in hot weather. In cooler weather, it runs on 87 just fine.

Straight gas is generally better than the ethanol blended gas, even at the same octane ratings.

The ethanol blends usually start with 85 octane subgrade gas and then the proper percentage of higher grade gas is blended with 10% ethanol to bring the octane rating up. I hauled gas for many years and am quite familiar with the blending procedures. A typical order for 91 octane ethanol blend is a 55%/35%/10% blend. 55% of the content is 85 octane, which is then mixed with 35% 91 octane gas and 10% ethanol by volume. The resultant octane rating is 91.

Thank the EPA for forcing the oil companies to do that. They fought it hard. Government knows best................

Yes, I traded the 06 Classic R III and a 2011 Thunderbird Storm in on the V V. Triumph left me, I didn't leave them.

get this app for pure gas. It will show you who has ethanol free gas. Kevinx said you could run 89 octane if your running flat ground or small hills. For mountains and large hills use 91 octane.
If you have your ATS at +6 or better always run 91 octane.

While that Puregas app is a useful guide, it is not completely accurate. You should still test the gas to make sure you are getting ethanol free gas, unless the pump you got it from is specifically labeled "ethanol free". I've seen stations listed as ethanol free when I knew for sure that they weren't. Those app listings are made by the general public and they are sometimes wrong.

KevinX will tell you to run the lowest octane gas you can without causing pinging. He will also tell you that continuously running too high of an octane gas will only cause carbon buildup, which, over time, will then necessitate the need for more high octane gas to combat the pinging caused by the hot spots that are caused by the carbon buildup.

The energy content of 87 octane gas is the same as the energy content of 91 octane gas. Higher octane just slows down the rate of combustion. High octane gas is of no benefit to performance, unless it is needed to slow down the rate of combustion to combat pinging. You are just wasting your money by using a higher octane gas than needed.

While I normally run premium in my 2010 Vision, I've used mid-grade...(87 octane?) a few times and couldn't tell a difference at all. I heard no knocking or pings nor back-fires but I'm not sure I'd use it all the time. I could tell a BIG difference on a recent quick ride around Lake Michigan running premium gas without ethanol at all and sure wish we could go back to that kind of gas again.

We have it around here in separate pumps typically. I'm going to run the 90 ethanol free for the next few tank fulls to see if there's a noticable difference. Thanks to the very knowledgable responders.

I run 100% gas in mine all the time unless away traveling , then you take what you can get. I run no corn 87 in the winter and no corn high octane in summer. 112,000 miles and spinning like a top.
