These bikes have an Idle Air Control valve. It may be sticking from sitting so long. You should be able to hear it clicking when turning the ignition on and again when shutting the bike off after it has been running. It can cause the off-throttle stalling issue.

Ronnie

Thanks Ronnie,

Is the IAC valve something that can be taken apart and cleaned like some on a car?

Or perhaps cleaned with throttle body/carb cleaner spray while on the bike?

Appreciate the help!

Wingman71, there should have been four bulbs that lit up when you hit the brakes; 2 up top and 2 on the bottom. That is probably the problem with his cruise. Cruise will not function if any of the brake light bulbs are out. There are 7 bulbs all together in the tail lights; 3 per side and 1 for the license plate. Takes a little bit to get the tail lights off to change a bulb, but not difficult just time consuming. Bulb number is a 3157 for the tail lights and w5w for the license light.

I'm pretty sure that the top two brake light bulbs were not working when we checked them.

I'll text John the info and the bulb number. Would be nice if he could fix the cruise before the ride from Oklahoma City back to Atlanta later this week.

Thanks very much for the info!

I do not know the answer to that question. The IAC is under the right side cheese wedge and under its own cover.

Is this bike completely stock? They come from the factory set up very lean, and consequently, some bikes experienced this issue even when everything was working, and others didn't. The ECU runs in closed loop operation and has narrowband O2 sensors. They are more trouble than they are worth on these bikes. Simply unplugging the O2 sensors throws the bike into open loop and enriches the mix just a bit. They generally run better this way. When adding a fuel controller, the O2 sensors should be unplugged. Unplugging them will NOT throw a code or turn on a check engine light.

sorry no fix for bad IAV.
Tell john not to blip throttle when downshifting it will kill bike. Did we say put 1/4" lock washers on each battery bolt they come loose a lot
when John gets back home do a check for air leaks with carb cleaner or if John can do it now would be good. There is no EFI bodies to clean

Ronnie,

The bike is completely stock.

I did notice the two big O2 sensors hanging out the side of the exhaust pipes. Kinda hard to miss them!

Will keep the unplugging option in mind.

Thanks!

Johnny,

I'll text John and tell him no blipping the throttle when downshifting, and to check the battery bolts.

The battery could possibly be part of the equation on this bike. As I mentioned, it sat unridden for about 5 months before the PO sold it, and it did not have a battery tender/maintainer hooked up to it. It just sat.

That said, the ride from Atlanta to Oklahoma surely should have charged the battery enough... unless of course it's sulfated beyond recovery.

Thanks again for the troubleshooting information! Greatly appreciated.
