Check out J Wales profile and you can find his email address to get more info from a local.

I've made a couple of trips through the Blue Ridge & Smoky Mntn area, but except for below, generally just wing it for hotel or camp ground. When I did the Dragon I went before noon and traffic was light. Personally I am a fan of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, but expect to get stuck in traffic if wildlife is spotted near the road. Although it is just a tourist town, Gatlinburg, TN is right outside of the park and not far from the west entrance to the Dragon. Nothing fancy, but roomy, with good parking, and friendly staff can be had at the Quality Inn, Gatlinburg, TN 800-473-8319.

I recall that Road Runner magazine did a couple of articles on the area as well if you can track them down.

I'm jealous.

2 notes of caution: in the Daniel Boone area if you end up off of the main roads watch for truck traffic, and if you decide to track down waterfalls the GPS might take you down roads that unexpectedly turn to dirt and gravel.
