Looks like I'll have to postpone our first planned trip to the smokies for late summer instead. My guess is the dragon will be busier than normal later this summer when it re-opens.

Thanks for the info. I was planning my first long ride there in May. Guess it will have to wait.

The tail is nice to ride, but there are many other very fine roads in that area of the country that anyone would enjoy riding. Plus they probably will have less traffic on them.

Me too. Don't miss going to the Smokies just because the "Dragon" is closed. "The Dragon" is mostly a marketing masterpiece that is overun with kamikaze pilots on two wheels and four. It's hard enough dodging an oncoming bike that's across the centerlane, let alone a sportscar. I've done the Dragon, got my shirts and pictures, now I'm done with it. Not done with the Smokies though. Can't get enough of them.

TDOT just annouced (4/8/10) that they would open the Dragon up from Deal's Gap to where the Rockslide is from 8 AM till 8 PM everyday!!! So the Dragon is NOW back open for business!!!! You just can not go past the rockslide to get to Foot Hills Parkway or head over to Maryville via the Dragon. You have to TURN around and ride the Dtragon again!! DARN!!!

Personnally I would not want to go near the dragon even with that setup. I road the dragon at dusk, fully loaded and didn't know it until I actually got to deals gap. Though it is world renown and I understand the draw, there will be a lot of widows and mommas crying this summer. I'm not excited one bit.

Ride Safe!

There are some local guys (read : Crotch rockets) that like to ride the Dragon at NIGHT!!! That is just insane....Not dusk but pitch black night, they say you avoid all the traffic and go faster...BS but they don't think about Bambi or some other little critter coming out in the middle of the road then...Just CRAZY!!

What about the Snake? I hear that it is just as good as the dragon but not as well known. Never been there but may be worth checking out. I hear its not too far from the dragon. Anyone from that nick of the woods know about it?

Here's the Snake info, if that is what Tazmo is talking about. http://www.motorcycleroads.us/roads/tn_us421.html I can't say I've rode the "Snake" but I've rode that part of the country and when you get off the beaten path around there, you will find some real interesting roads and a few surprises if you are not diligent.

John - your welcome.

no problem Blackjack.

more info on rt 129... http://www.citizen-times.com/article/20100412/NEWS/100412010/1009

I hope they have an EMS plan... it takes TN police 2 hours to drive around just to patrol that section of 129 in TN. That also means they lose some EMS capabilities. Not putting gloom on the situation, but they'll be shutting it down again before they finish clearing.

The Snake is a GREAT road...Lots of twisites and excellent pavement!! It is about 1 1/2 hours away from Knoxville, it is up in the Tri Cities area...for me it is an all day ride figuring leaving my house and all...lots of motorcycles in the area and it (US 421) branches off to many other FUN roads as well...and if you get off  the beaten path, jsut be careful you don't here "dualing banjos" or somebody saying "boy' he sure does have a purty mouth"    One reason I carry my Glock ALL the TIME up there!!!  J/K I carry my Glock all the time anyway!

No for the Dragon Graham county NC is covering the EMS response for th earea, but THP is doing traffic enforcement...so it should stay open with that agreement it was that way for years before Blount county decided to get there chunk of money for EMS response...

I tried to get on the dragon this weekend. It is open on the North Carolina side. They do not expect it to be open till August 1st. This information was from a highway department worker standing at the closed sign handing out directions on how to get on it from the N.C. side. They have cleared it out a couple times, and the rocks continue to slide and close the road. I still had a great time riding the smokies.

I rode the dragon yesterday from the NC side, accompanied by my brother on his Kawasaki Vulcan 750. We turned around about 2 miles before where it is closed and came back. There is no traffic on it except motorcycles and sports cars (Dodge Viper, various Corvettes, etc.) There were lots of sports bikes but somehow they did not bother me this time.

We rode the dragon about 5 years ago when I had a Goldwing 1800. I could not keep up with my brother and I scared myself several times. This year, on the Vision, I stayed right on his tail and did not scare myself once. I like this bike a lot.

I get up to that area fairly often, and rarely even touch that section of 129. There are many other roads around there that are just as nice, and way less crowded.
