Five riders dead and two in critical condition in San Antonio in less than a week.

One rider rear ended.
Two pairs of bikes went down - one set was riding side by side when they collided.
One rider hit the side of an SUV that pulled out in front of them.
Another rider, an off duty police officer, went down and then was struck by traffic.

All I am saying is "Be careful out there!"

4/13 - Man suspected of drunken driving when he rear-ended a motorcycle.

Carlos Ryan Rodriguez, 21. His blue Dodge Stratus came to a stop in a grassy shoulder with Van Volkenburg, who wore a helmet, pinned beneath, police said. Witnesses reportedly stopped to help and were able to lift the car off of the motorcyclist, who is from Helotes.

4/13 - One killed in crash near Loop 1604 - Deputies said two motorcycles collided with a red pickup, causing both motorcyclists to be thrown from their vehicles. Cause unknown.

4/14 - A motorcyclist was killed Tuesday morning after colliding with an SUV.

Officials said the motorcyclist, identified as Joseph Gerrish of Floresville, was northbound on U.S. 181 around 10 a.m. when a 35-year-old woman driving a maroon Chevrolet Suburban pulled out in front of him, attempting to cross the highway.

4/15 - Two motorcycles riding side by side wreck. One rider struck and killed by traffic.
A motorcyclist who was killed Tuesday night in a collision with another motorcycle in Southeast Bexar County has been identified as Dwayne J. Murillo, 37, of San Antonio, authorities said Wednesday.

The other motorcyclist ? Fidel Trevino Jr., 23, of Poth ? remained in critical condition Wednesday afternoon at University Hospital, where he was airlifted after the accident.

Murillo was driving a 2006 Harley-Davidson west on FM 1303 alongside Trevino, who was on a 2009 Yamaha, when they collided about 9 p.m. Tuesday near Loop 1604, officials said. It wasn?t clear what caused them to crash into each other.

The men were thrown from their motorcycles. Murillo landed in the westbound lane, Trevino in the eastbound lane.

A witness, who pulled over to help, tried to stop a maroon Chevrolet pickup but its driver didn?t see Murillo lying in the roadway and struck him, an police report states.

4/17 An off-duty officer with the NEISD was killed in a motorcycle accident.

Joseph Diaz, 63, had just finished a funeral escort and was traveling north in the 5300 block of Presa Street near Hot Wells Boulevard hen he lost control of his motorcycle, fell onto the roadway and was struck by a passing vehicle.

Yep, it's been pretty hazardous for riders down here lately. The last three of those were within 10 miles of my house with the last one less than a mile away. US Highway 181 is known for having folks pull out in front of you all the time--whether you're riding or driving! Don't know what caused the two side-by-siders to collide, but it couldn't have been anything smart--another argument against side by side riding. I really can't think of why the motor patrolman lost it. I drive/ride that stretch of road weekly and there just isn't a lot there. Plus, he had to have plenty of training. I haven't heard if there were any witnesses or not, but you sort of have to think that something (or someone) caused him to veer and wreck and then probably left the scene (could have been a stray dog, I guess)---impossible to tell now (at least until someone comes forward that witnessed the event).

As always, be careful out there!!

Magic,

The officer could have had a front tire blowout. Who knows at this point.

Rob,

I have been following that story from your area as close as one can from Texas. I tried calling the local talk radio station to discuss the Meth using truck driver from AZ and they did not want the topic on the air.

It really chokes me up to think of the details. I sent the story to all of my riding friends and posted it to Facebook.

We have a bunch of rock haulers all over this county that need to line up for a urine test. They drive like they are in sports cars while hauling tons of rock and gravel.

Almost every rock hauler has a sign on the back that makes my blood boil. "Stay back 200 feet. Not responsible for broken windshields." What a bunch of BS! If anything falls off of that truck they are completely responsible. I do not care if it does no damage at all...they should pull over and sweep it off the road and put it back in the truck!

I guess that they think if you tell a lie long enough, people will start to believe it.

Ride Safe

We seem to have the same around Houston each Spring. My take was always riders getting their scoots out of the garage for that first Spring ride and just having rusty skills????
