Here is the scenario (2010 Vision approx 2400 miles). Saturday, temp in low 80's, no wind and plenty of humidity. I was part of a motorcycle procession for the local Memorial Day parade. The parade was about 3 miles in length and it was a lot of duck-walking to zooming up to maybe 3mph. The engine and pipes cooked my legs to a nice medium well and some people claimed they could smell bacon. But I digress.
After the ride we all went to a rally point to remove all the patriotic flags, ribbons and others and I shut off the bike. We waited there for about 15 minutes and when I went to restart my bike - it just said NO.
I had power and you could hear the starter wanting to start but nothing more. I waited another 15-20 minutes and it started back up but was idling a little rough. Drove it home and shut it down and waited a few hours and then started it back up without any problems. During the parade my temp gauge on the console was showing between 115 to 117.
Here are some questions about this.
1. Did I do something really stupid by putting this in a parade?
2. Did I need to rev the engine during the ride to keep the rpms up so the oil cooler did a better job?
3. Should I have ridden it around the block to help cool it down (now I know I should have done that).
4. What was causing this to overheat and not start? Fuel pump? Computer telling it that it was too hot and needed to cool down? Anything?

I had gone to Rolling Thunder the past few years but didn't want to chance it since th Vision acted up and I didn't want to possibly cause some extra damage.
Have started it up today without any problems so I just want to figure out what I did and avoid not doing that again - or should I not enter into any more parades?
Member of ALR and we do a lot of these events.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

rev'n the engine wouldnt of cooled it down anymore because of a lack of air flow.. also it take a few miles to cool the oil down when its real hot. You might want to get the oil temp dipstick.. i bet you were in 300F+ area.. if so you might want to think about changing your oil if your not running synthetic. My friends Harley does the samething if it gets to hot..

if you do alot of these parades and you need to stop to remove a flag. dont turn the bike off, unless you plan on sitting a spell.. When i get caught in pittsburgh taffic and i watch my oil temp dipstick climb, once i break free of the traffic it takes a few good miles of now stop riding for the temp to lower.. and thats at speed of 45mph+

Arkainzeye - Thanks on the mention of the oil temp dipstick. I was wondering if that might have alerted me - but live and learn.

Find yourself a good parade fan if you plan on doing these types of rides regularly. Harley sells one that could be modified to work on the Vision. You could power it directly on by using the spare console swt location by purchasing a spare toggle from victory. IF you have any bike swapmeets in your area this summer you might be able to find that fan cheaper than buying new, OR you could pick up a 12v fan at autozone and make your own mount so it blows air across the oil cooler when the swt is activated.

Arkainzeve,

I was looking at that dipstick but didn't know if it would fit my 2010 Vision, because in the fitment category. But then again, it does fit for the CrossRoads and CrossCountry. I'll probably order one this week.
Thanks.

The Victory temp dip stick will fit the Vision without any problems. I cross decked mine when I traded my TCD for my 2010 Vision. I just did a Patriot Guard escort mission bringing a fallen Marine home this past Thursday. All along the route off NAS Jacksonville we never got above 3 MPH. Then from the base to Gainesville we never got over 45 MPH. All during the long ride off the base the temp hovered around 265 degrees, after we got above 25 MPH the temp stayed at 250 degrees. Yes it was a toasty ride but never had any problems. Victory makes a point to test these engines in extreme conditions so you should be fine but fresh oil is always a safe bet. Ride safe!

Ingle51,
I will order one of these. Plus I also know now I need to not just shut it down and ride around a little before I shut it down.
It was just a little embarassing in front of GW's and HD's, I just told them that I was running low on my dilithium crystals for the starship.

Load test the battery just to check it, the heat is worse on a battery than the cold.

You might ought to double check your battery connections also, Vics need tight connections to ensure maxim current draw for the starter. Dilithium crystals only go so far, loose connections will limit how much current can be used by the electrical system. Live long and prosper!

LarryinMD, not sure what your fuel tank level was during this issue, but if it was low(light on), it could have been the issue if you were starting with the bike on the kick stand. Mine will not start on the kick stand sometimes if the tank level is very low. I get on the bike and stand it up and it starts fine then. Also mentioned last year in a posting, that some folks cycle the key twice prior to pushing the starter button when they know the bike has been very hot and has sat for a short time. That may clear any vapor in the fuel pump and fuel system.

Had a parade fan on my HD Road King and according to the oil temp guage it did not lower the temp one degree. It also vibrated a lot when on to the point where it had to be retightened often. Also not useable above 5mph or so. For hot days when travelling at speeds above 5 but below 20 it was not useable. Too much money for too little results.

VisionTex,
Thanks for these suggestions. Had not thought of the fuel level - didn't have the light on but it was near the lower level. Plus I'll also remember (hopefully) about cycling the key at the start point. Both I had never thought of. Thanks so much.
Can't wait til retirement and I'll be moving back to Texas. (Home)
Thanks again,
